Contract signed for third phase of design and construction of first Belgrade Subway line – Moles en route to Serbia

Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure in a caretaker capacity Aleksandra Sofronijevic together with representatives of the public utility company Belgrade Metro and Train, the Belgrade City Secretariat for Public Transport, and the Chinese company PowerChina signed a contract for the design and construction of Lot 3 of the first phase of Belgrade Subway Line 1.

Sofronijevic emphasized that “today marks another major step toward final implementation of a decades-long aspiration of all citizens given that the construction of the subway will provide Serbia’s capital city with a modern, efficient public transport system that connects various parts of Belgrade, relieves pressure on existing transport infrastructure, and creates conditions for the further development and modernization of public transport.”

The Minister stated that the signing of the contract for Lot 3 effectively completes the first phase of Belgrade Subway Line 1, which will span 15.4 kilometers.

In this way, the Belgrade Subway is no longer just a decades-long wish, but a project that is becoming our reality, she stated.

Sofronijevic recalled that, over the past three years, the Republic of Serbia has signed several significant contracts with PowerChina regarding Lots 1 and 2, and highlighted that the TBM machines, known as “moles,” which were manufactured and factory-tested in China, are already en route to Serbia.

According to her, the TBMs were manufactured exclusively for the construction of the Belgrade Subway, each machine is 110 meters long and weighs approximately 1,500 tons, while the cutterhead diameter is 9.7 meters.

Sofronijevic expressed gratitude to the Chinese partners, specifically the company PowerChina, for the successful cooperation to date, as well as for their professionalism and dedication to the project’s implementation, the Government website reported.

She also extended her thanks to the Serbian institutions and expert teams involved in the project’s preparation and execution, highlighting that it is currently one of the most complex and demanding infrastructure projects in the Republic of Serbia.

The contract was signed at the Serbian government by Slaven Andric on behalf of the Secretariat for Public Transport, Andreja Mladenovic on behalf of Belgrade Metro and Train, and on behalf of PowerChina by the company’s Vice President for Eurasian Operations Yang Fan.
