The Belgrade Metro and Train Public Utility Company has submitted a request to the Ministry of Environmental Protection to determine the scope and content of the environmental impact assessment study for the construction project of the Belgrade Subway facilities. This is the second phase of the first line of the future subway from the Pancevo Bridge to Mirijevo.

Line 1, as stated, runs in a southwest-northeast direction, on the right bank of the Sava River, from Zeleznik to Stari Grad, then in a west-east direction on the south bank of the Danube to Ada Huja, and then in a north-south direction along the bottom of the valley that climbs up Mirijevski Boulevard to the final station Mirijevo. The total length of the reference route is 21.3 km and includes 21 stations, and their construction is planned in two phases.

The subject of this environmental impact assessment is precisely phase 2 of line 1, with a total route length of 6.47 km.

The route on this section, as specified, is planned to be underground in a deep excavation (with a TBM), while all stations and shafts will be built in an open excavation.

The section from the Pancevo Bridge station to Mirijevo is planned in a deep tunnel with a length of about 6.47 km. The route direction on this section is planned to run parallel along Despota Stefana Boulevard, Visnjicka Street and Mirijevski Boulevards.

The second phase of the first subway line will begin in the Pancevo Bridge zone, where the terminus for the public passenger transport bus subsystem and the existing BG Voz station are located on the west side of the bridge.

Within this part of the first line route, the subway will pass by the “Despot Stefan Lazarevic” Elementary School to a large park area where a parking area and a unified station for subway lines 1 and 2 are planned.

– Underground parking will provide conditions for servicing vehicles in the function of the second subway line, while for the first subway line, an extension of the route to Matice srpske Street is planned, where ventilation shaft 13 on a green surface is also planned with the completion of this route – the documentation states.

The second phase of line 1 from the Pancevo Bridge to Mirijevo will have seven stations, five underground auxiliary facilities (shafts) and a parking facility in Mirijevo. For this part of the first subway line, the type of track on a solid surface, i.e. on a concrete slab, has been adopted. As for the parking tracks, they will be located in a tunnel and a total of ten parking positions will be available.

When it comes to the train sets, they will consist of three wagons, with a total length of 54 meters, but with the possibility of expanding to a set of four wagons, or a total length of 72 meters. The estimated service life of the train set is set at least 30 years. The planned capacity of the train set is 429 passengers per set of three wagons.

As indicated, the second phase of the project is dimensioned according to the expected number of passengers per hour in one direction during the morning rush hour, multiplied by a safety factor of 1.25, resulting in a maximum load of 10,815 passengers. During rush hour, the required departure interval for a three-car train set is 152 seconds. With a round-trip time of approximately one hour and 8 minutes, 27 trainsets are required to operate on Line 1, Phase 2 during rush hour, resulting in a total fleet size of 31 trainsets including an operational reserve and a maintenance reserve of 15%.

Facilities on the route from Pancevo Bridge to Mirijevo

Pancevo Bridge Station Building – The entrances to the station building will be located in the northern part of the station, and emergency stairs, as well as technical openings and grates will be predominantly located in the western part of the station. The station is designed as an underground type, and will consist of a ground floor level and three underground levels: the large hall level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The height of the station entrance will be 5.35 m.

Two public entrances to the station from the ground level are planned. The entrances will be located in the northern part of the station, one of which will lead from the future park, and the other will provide a connection to the new building under the existing overpass, and thus a connection to the existing BG Voz station. Passengers will reach the large hall from both entrances. The northern entrance will lead directly to the underground unpaid area, while the entrance from the new building under the overpass will be connected to the station building by a long corridor with ramps, stairs, escalators and elevators. On the first underground level, or at the large hall level, passengers will pass through a line of control gates and access the stairs, escalators or elevators, which will serve all platforms.

The main operational and passenger services rooms will be located at the level of the large hall next to the entrance. Emergency exits are provided at the western end of both platforms. There is a sub-platform level below each platform, which allows for the implementation of technical rooms and equipment (escalator and elevator pits).

Total GFA: 8,604.81 m2

Karaburma Rail Station Building – The entrances to the station building will be located in the eastern part of the station, while the emergency stairs, as well as technical openings and grates will be mainly located in the western part. The station is expected to play a significant role in encouraging a modal shift from individual cars to the subway. Therefore, the station building will have to be legible and provide a new look for this area, together with the planned residential and commercial buildings. Bus stops, a P+R with 450 spaces, bicycle parking spaces, and unloading areas are planned near the station.

The station is designed as an underground type, and will consist of a ground floor and four underground levels: the main hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The entrance height to the station will be 5.20 m (main entrance) and 3.50 m (secondary entrance). There will be two entrances from the ground floor level, the main entrance to the station will be located on the north side of Visnjicki Boulevard, while the secondary entrance connects the station with the BG Voz facilities. From both entrances, passengers will go directly to the main hall level. On the first underground level, passengers will pass through a line of control gates and access stairs, escalators or elevators, which will serve the transitional mezzanine. From this transitional level, passengers will descend to the platforms using other stairs or escalators. The main operational and passenger services rooms will be located on the main hall level near the entrance. Emergency exits will be located at the western end of each platform. The access to the operational and maintenance areas is shared with the main passenger entrances. And below each platform there is a sub-platform level for the implementation of technical rooms and equipment (pits for escalators and elevators).

Total GFA: 10,596.35 m2

Ada Huja Station Building - The entrance to the station building will be located in the western part of the station. As emphasized, in order for the station and its urban environment to fit into the existing and planned urban context, each of the plot boundaries is treated in a specific way: the eastern boundary corresponds to the existing block boundary (subject to renovation), and the northern boundary is a new strong urban axis.

The station is designed as an underground type, with a ground floor and four underground levels: the main hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The main operational and passenger service rooms will be located on the main hall level near the entrance. The technical rooms will be arranged on the main hall, mezzanine and platform levels. Emergency exits are located at the eastern end of each platform.

Total GFA: 9,886.97 m2

Karaburma Station Building
- The planned ground level is based on the existing topography of the terrain. The entrance to the station building will be located in the southern part of the station, and the emergency stairs, as well as technical openings and grates will be mainly located in the northwestern part of the station. The existing location, as emphasized, presents great limitations for urban integration, as the station is located in the immediate vicinity of Mirijevski Boulevard and the Karaburma shopping center. The main goal of urban integration, as it is added, is to create a compact and visible access along Mirijevski Boulevard. Therefore, it is proposed to create an open public space in front of the station entrance, which will be connected to Mirijevski Boulevard and Salvadora Aljendea Street, which could take in pedestrian traffic from the west side (dense residential area).

As there is a significant difference in ground level between the station access level and its western part, a circular staircase is proposed to connect the upper existing plateau of the single-floor existing building with the level of Mirijevski Boulevard. In the area in front of the shopping mall, northwest of the station entrance, a parking lot with 45 parking spaces is proposed.

The station is designed as an underground station, with a ground floor and four underground levels: the main hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The height of the station entrance will be 3.15 m (access A) and 3.55 m (access B). The main operational and passenger services rooms will be located at the level of the main hall near the entrance. Emergency exits are located at the northwest end of each platform.

Total GFA: 10,585.88 m2

Mirijevski Boulevard Station Building
– Two entrances to the station are planned. The main entrance will be located directly above the underground station, while the side entrance will be located on the opposite side of Mirijevski Boulevard, west of the station. Emergency stairs, as well as technical openings and grates will be located mainly in the southern part of the station. Plazas/squares are planned in front of both entrances to the station. Pedestrian connection across Mirijevski Boulevard will be achieved by an underground station tunnel.

The station is designed as an underground type, and will consist of a ground floor and four underground levels: the main hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The height of the station entrance will be 3.5 m (access A) and 4.6 m (access B). The main rooms for operational and passenger services will be located at the level of the main hall near the entrance. Emergency exits will be located at the southern end of each platform.

Total GFA: 10,656.00 m2

Seventh Belgrade Gymnasium Station Building – The station building will be located in the immediate vicinity of this gymnasium. One entrance to the station is planned to be located on the eastern side of Mirijevski Boulevard. Emergency stairs, as well as technical openings and grates will be mainly located in the southern part of the station.

The station is designed as an underground building with a ground floor and four underground levels: the large hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. The main rooms for operational and passenger services will be located on the large hall level near the entrance. Emergency exits will be located at the southern end of each platform.

Total GFA: 10,042.21 m2

Mirijevo Station Building – The main urban integration principle for this station is to integrate its approach into the pedestrian circulation network that exists in the residential area. To achieve this functional integration, a large square will be implemented within the existing park. The new square will be large enough to accommodate renovated facilities such as playgrounds, it is stated. The main public access to the station will be located in the center of this new square.

The Mirijevo station will be designed to take into account the functionality of Line 1 and Line 2, even if Line 2 is built after Line 1. Therefore, as emphasized, Mirijevo station will be twice as large as the basic station. The functional design proposal is one large station within which the Line 1 station and Line 2 station are organized. The northern end of Line 1 will be located in the eastern part of the station, while the eastern end of Line 2 will be located in the western part.

The station is designed as an underground station, and will consist of a ground floor and four underground levels: the large hall level, the mezzanine level, the platform level and the sub-platform level. It will have two entrances, and the main one will be located above the main station box with an access oriented towards Mirijevski Venac Street. The secondary access is oriented to the north in the green area of the park. The main operational and passenger services rooms will be located at the level of the large hall near the entrance. Emergency exits will be located at the southern end of each platform.
