“Staklenac” to be demolished to make way for subway – Future station at Republic Square to be located 33 meters underground

After the property and legal relations are resolved and when the last owner is paid, the demolition of “Staklenac” will begin, in whose place the future subway station “Republic Square” will be built. Passengers will descend 33 meters underground to the platform, and the authorities have announced that the works will also include archaeological research, as well as the arrival of tunnel-digging machines in late September or early October.

Passengers will descend as much as 33 meters underground to the future subway station at the Republic Square. The station will have three underground floors and will be one of the most important ones on the first subway line.

– Its side concrete walls that will hold the station itself are at a depth of 55 meters, and the last point where passengers will get off is at a depth of 33 meters. So, this construction project will involve some 100,000 cubic meters of loose material to be removed from this plot, which is about 5,000 trucks – explains City Manager Miroslav Cuckovic.

Before the works, it is necessary to prepare the terrain. The “Republic Square” subway station will be located where “Staklenac” is now - the forerunner of today’s shopping malls, which is why its demolition is certain. The authorities are currently negotiating with the owners.

– We have paid over six billion dinars in terms of expropriation. We did not want anything to go against the owners anywhere. We have always tried to meet the legal requirements and the possibility of paying the price. That is how we have worked here, considering that almost half of all the buildings have been resolved – emphasizes Cuckovic.
