The students of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering in Belgrade who are blocking the faculty have announced that the Belgrade-Subotica railroad was supposed to be a Serbia-worthy project, with a (train) speed of 160 km/h, affordable costs and real maintenance, whereas now it is a total failure and “the most expensive political illusion on rails.” On Instagram, they said that the decision to go for a railroad with a speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour had been made not out of necessity or as a result of an analysis, but due to image and marketing, the announcement says.

– The result is that the construction costs jump 40%, that the price of one train grows from six to EUR 21 million, that the railroad and train maintenance costs jump by an additional 50%... – wrote the students of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering.

– And all this in order to save three minutes from Belgrade to Novi Sad, or eight minutes to Subotica - per train, per hour, in one direction – says the announcement.

It is also estimated that the money could have been used to procure more trains with a higher capacity, to fix some additional important railroad, to improve the BG Voz system…

– In a country in which the system is not working, we have bought a Lamborghini, and our house has no façade or running water – they said.

They also believe that the worst is yet to come, because, as they pointed out, due to the standardization, the same “mold” now has to be used for the construction of the railroad to Nis.
