The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) continuously monitors the operations of banks, tracking their capital adequacy, liquidity, and risk exposure. In the event that irregularities are identified, it takes measures in accordance with the law, the Governor's Office announced. The central bank states that specific findings from these supervisory checks cannot be publicly disclosed beyond the scope permitted by law, emphasizing that preserving the stability of the financial system and the security of citizens' deposits remains a constant priority.

The NBS says that all banks operating in Serbia are required to comply continuously with the prescribed requirements concerning capital, liquidity, risk management and the quality of their operations. Supervision is carried out through the analysis of submitted documentation and other available data, as well as off-site and on-site supervision of all aspects of banks' operations falling within its exclusive remit under valid regulations.

When irregularities are identified during supervision, the NBS acts in accordance with the law and takes measures within its remit, depending on the nature and significance of the identified irregularities. At the same time, the institution reminds that restrictions in disclosing confidential supervisory information do not mean that supervision is not being carried out.

– The National Bank of Serbia remains committed to the principle that matters relating to banking system stability and the operations of individual banks are considered professionally, impartially and on the basis of facts, within its legally established competences – the press release says.

The NBS reminds that, even during the complete disruption of supply chains caused by the pandemic, it ensured adequate quantities of foreign cash and actively took measures under its remit to facilitate predictability for both citizens and businesses.

The press release also notes that responsibility for preserving financial stability lies not only with the National Bank of Serbia but also with all other institutions and individuals. It also warns that spreading unverified and sensationalist claims can increase the uncertainty and cause harm to the citizens.

– The stability of the financial system is an important pillar of stability – the central bank notes.
