These machines do not resemble the computers we use daily. They lack monitors and keyboards, yet they can process millions of data points simultaneously. They perform complex calculations, tasks that would take ordinary computers days or even years, in just a few minutes.
Domestic scientists, universities and technology companies are already utilizing the capacity of the two supercomputers in Kragujevac free of charge. For many, this presents an opportunity to develop technological solutions without having to invest in expensive equipment.
– They are used for various AI models, machine learning, and cybersecurity, as well as in healthcare and bioengineering. I'll mention two interesting projects. The first involves the use of artificial intelligence in the e-agriculture system, where it processes large volumes of data and documentation. The second is AI-driven mammography, where artificial intelligence analyzes a vast number of mammogram images, assisting radiologists in screening and detecting abnormalities at the earliest possible stage – says Boban Mihailovic from the Office for Information Technologies and eGovernment.
The first supercomputer in Kragujevac, equipped with 32 graphics processing units, had a performance of five petaflops, that is, five quadrillion computational operations per second.
With the commissioning of a second unit, featuring an additional 48 advanced GPUs, computing capacity was increased by another 32 petaflops.
In the coming months, Kragujevac will receive a third and by far the most powerful supercomputer. Arriving from France, it will be equipped with 640 state-of-the-art Nvidia chips and will be 20 times more powerful than the existing system.
– We are increasing the capacity of our artificial intelligence platform eightfold. This will enable our scientific community, startups and government institutions to work on a sophisticated infrastructure right here in Serbia – adds Mihailovic.
One specific project that will utilize the new supercomputer's capacity is the development of a national language model, in collaboration with the French company Mistral AI. The goal is for the artificial intelligence to better understand the Serbian language and the Cyrillic script, as well as specialized terminology in fields such as law, medicine and education.
– It is incredibly important that we entered the race for artificial intelligence adoption in a timely manner. Artificial intelligence cannot be implemented without supercomputers and large-scale computing systems. It is already evident that our IT sector has shifted its focus toward this new technology, moving away from traditional digital systems and embracing artificial intelligence – says Mihailo Jovanovic, Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.
In a world where the power of states is increasingly based on technological superiority, supercomputers and data centers are becoming an important part of strategic infrastructure.
