Serbia has the potential to position itself in the field of chip design, as more than 1,000 engineers work in this sector. With the necessary investment, the country could focus on developing domestic products and its own intellectual property, stated Djuro Macut, Prime Minister of Serbia in a caretaker capacity, while presenting the results of the Working Group for the Development and Design of Integrated Circuits (Chips).

Noting that the initiative to form the Working Group had originated with engineers and professors who had built their careers in Serbia and at leading global companies, Macut emphasized that this design phase preceded actual manufacturing, a process requiring the construction of specialized factories and investments amounting to tens of billions of dollars.

– Serbia is focusing on a field where it already possesses an established base of expertise. Connecting universities, research institutes, and the business sector is crucial, as is adapting education to new technological conditions and future development needs – Macut said.

He noted that these new technologies had potential applications in medicine, agriculture, and other strategic sectors, adding that Serbia’s ambition was not merely to be a user of modern technologies, but also a country that created them.

Mihailo Jovanovic, Director of the Office for Information Technologies and eGovernment and Chair of the Working Group, emphasized that Serbia possessed the knowledge, expertise, and potential to make a significant leap forward in the field of integrated circuit design.

According to him, the Working Group has focused its efforts on three key areas - science and education, the business sector and the institutional framework.

– Our goal is to connect these three pillars and create conditions for the development of domestic technologies and intellectual property, the strengthening of engineering capabilities, and closer ties between universities and the business sector. This would lay the foundation for developing competitive domestic solutions and strengthening Serbia’s position within the global semiconductor industry ecosystem – said Jovanovic.
