Belgrade Airport expansion, rail station and Air Serbia complex construction in full swing – Building permit for hotel expected too

Work on the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport complex, which includes the expansion of the passenger terminal, the new Air Serbia district, the renovation of the Aeronautics Museum and a new rail station and rail link, is in full swing.

The passenger terminal expansion is on schedule and is expected to be completed by May next year. The airport is adding new gates to Terminal C wing - C15, 16, 17 and 18. While C15 - C17 will have air bridges, C18, unlike the neighboring stands, will be a contactless (remote) gate, meaning that passengers will not use the bridge to board passengers, but will be transported to and from the terminal by bus. The stand is designed to accommodate aircraft with the code C, with a maximum wingspan of 36 meters. The project also includes the construction of a new taxiway T-junction, service roads, stormwater drainage, upgraded apron lighting and a roadway capable of carrying aircraft. Four new travelators will be installed inside the terminal, evenly spaced between departures and arrivals.

Works on the construction of a collector system for the drainage of treated stormwater from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport are in the final stages. The new 1,650-meter-long tunnel has a capacity of more than 25 cubic meters per second, which is a significant increase compared to the existing collector and ensures a much higher level of operational resilience of the airport, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

As for the construction of the new Air Serbia headquarters across from the airport, work is currently focused on installing glass panels on the exterior of the building. It will have a total gross area of 7,985 square meters and will match the height of the neighboring Aeronautics Museum. Completion is scheduled for May 15, 2027. The development will also include landscaped green areas and an open-air parking lot in the north-west part of the site with 140 spaces, including six designated for people with reduced mobility. A new bypass and access street are being built next to the complex, providing a connection to the future airport train station currently under construction.

At the same time, the foundations for a planned airport hotel, also being built by Air Serbia, have been laid, while an additional office building within the complex is expected to follow at a later stage. The airline is now awaiting a building permit for the hotel.

Work has also begun on the expansion of the Aeronautics Museum, which has been closed to the public for several years. Around 6,000 square meters of the existing space will be renovated, while new facilities will be built within the museum complex, including multi-purpose hangars.

A major new road junction is also under construction to improve access to the airport and surrounding commercial areas. The project envisages replacing the existing access system with a full interchange connecting the airport road with the M11 motorway through Belgrade. The plan includes around 2.5 kilometers of intersections, a new underpass under the motorway, parallel access ramps and the reconstruction and widening of approximately 1.5 kilometers of the airport road, with sections with up to three lanes in each direction. Two roundabouts are also planned to provide access to future business and commercial projects, along with a new 1.34 kilometer connecting road. The Belgrade Land Development Public Agency has issued a tender for the preparation of technical documentation.

The construction of a new rail connection to the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is also progressing, with the 18.3 kilometer double-track line due to be completed by the end of the year. Construction work on the airport railway station is progressing. Engineering trains and specialized railway machinery are deployed on the line from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport to the National Stadium, on the section running alongside the future Belgrade Airport station. Specialized equipment is being deployed for the compaction, levelling and geometric alignment of the track after the track has been laid, which is one of the key stages in preparing the railway for future operations. The electrified railway, designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, will connect the airport with Belgrade’s existing railway network and will be part of the broader transport infrastructure being developed ahead of EXPO 2027, which begins on May 15.
