Works on Morava Corridor nearing completion – More isolated parts of the country to be connected too

The road infrastructure in Serbia has been expanded in recent years with new highways and expressways, while work is underway on several corridors.

The remaining section of the Morava Corridor and other road routes is expected to be completed soon.

Connecting of Western Serbia completed

Infrastructure is a reflection of a country’s development. After decades of stagnation, new kilometers of highways, expressways, renovated or new border crossings, toll stations and bridges have changed the economic image of Serbia.

Assistant Director of the Public Enterprise “Roads of Serbia” Miodrag Poledica says that, just last year, a 20-kilometer section of the highway from Cacak to Pozega was completed, which, he emphasizes, completes the connection of western Serbia.

Reminding about the road routes that have been built in the past few years, he estimates that these are projects of great importance, with a total length of about 230 kilometers.

– Half a million residents of western and central Serbia are already benefiting from the completed Morava Corridor. Travel time from Belgrade to Kraljevo now takes about an hour and 15 minutes. In recent years, 100 kilometers of the Morava Corridor have been built, and 12 kilometers remain, from the Vrba interchange to Adrane, when this road route will be fully completed – he says.

Every new road brings new factories

Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic points out that one of the most important results of building road infrastructure is connecting previously traffic-isolated parts of Serbia with the main corridors.

According to her, every new road brings new factories, logistics centers, tourist investments and new jobs.

Today, Serbia has more than 1,200 kilometers of highways and expressways. In the last decade, the network of first-tier state roads and expressways has increased by 650 kilometers, and more than 430 kilometers are currently being built.

Poledica emphasizes that the goal is for Serbia, which is surrounded by eight countries, to be crisscrossed be a high-quality and safe road network.

Acting Director of the Traffic Safety Agency Branko Stamatovic points out that modern roads, with separated directions of movement and graded intersections, have enabled greater traffic flow and significantly increased the safety of all participants.

Another 115 km by the end of the year

All standards and conditions required for the design and construction of highways, bridges and tunnels on the road network in Serbia have been taken over from the European Union, which assesses Serbia as the strongest economy in the region.

– The greatest economic benefit is precisely the opening of new factories, strengthening the economy. This was only possible when we reached such a level of infrastructure development that people want to invest in Serbia. Serbia is today a competitive and the strongest country in terms of economic growth, I would say, not only in the region but also in Europe – says Minister Sofronijevic.

By the end of the year, 115 kilometers of new roads should be opened to traffic – 12 kilometers of the Morava Corridor from the Vrba interchange to Adrane, almost 30 kilometers of the Danube Corridor and 18 kilometers of the highway from Kuzmin to Sremska Raca.

This is not the end, as more than 800 kilometers of new highways and expressways are in the design phase.
