Three new gates at Nikola Tesla Airport before EXPO opens - Expansion of air network with Republika Srpska also under consideration

Nikola Tesla Airport will get three new gates by EXPO 2027, Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut said during a visit to the expansion works at the capital's airport.

As reported by TV Una, he pointed out that Belgrade Airport is not only a major air traffic hub in the region but also a symbol of a modern and developed Serbia.

- Three new gates and jet bridges are being opened. Nikola Tesla Airport has experienced major expansion, having handled nine million passengers last year and already more than four million so far this year, which is a good indicator of development, with a high growth rate in the number of passengers passing through our airport, primarily coming to Serbia, but also using it as a transit point - Macut pointed out.

Macut stressed that Nikola Tesla Airport is unquestionably a regional hub, covering the whole region from Vienna to Athens. He added that he had also discussed the expansion of the air network with Republika Srpska with Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic, adding that the construction of the Trebinje airport is also being discussed. He stated that the airport would provide an additional connection with Republika Srpska.

He pointed out that he had also discussed the introduction of new air routes and the acquisition of new aircraft with the management of Nikola Tesla Airport and Air Serbia.

Nikola Tesla Airport Executive Director for Commercial Affairs Miodrag Mirkovic also said that the construction of the three new gates would be completed before EXPO.

- In preparation for the upcoming event in 2027, we are working on extending the C apron and C corridor by adding three additional waiting areas, three gates and four more aircraft parking positions equipped with jet bridges. We hope this will position Belgrade even better as a regional hub and contribute to the development of air traffic - he pointed out.

As for Terminal 1, he added, work is being carried out on commercial facilities that do not affect passenger flows.

Mirkovic recalled that the first investment cycle began just over seven years ago and was worth EUR 360 million. According to him, further work is now continuing, with the expansion of the gates underway. Mirkovic recalled that the terminal building, excluding the announced expansion, covers 93,000 square meters.

- We also built an additional runway and expanded the maneuvering areas. In the meantime, the additional space will range from 11,000 to 12,000 square meters, which will further contribute to our increased passenger handling capacity. When we talk about passenger capacity, it depends on traffic and flight schedules. If flights are concentrated during certain periods, capacity is only partially utilized. If we manage to distribute traffic throughout the entire day, our capacity will be much greater in terms of the number of passengers and flights we can handle - he said.
