Site preparation begins for Backa Palanka–Nestin bridge construction as nearly EUR 130 million project gets underway

The issuance of a temporary building permit for preparatory works has marked the start of the project to construct a new bridge over the Danube in the Municipality of Backa Palanka, the local government announced.

The preparatory works include the construction of an access road, earthworks, and site preparation for the bridge. Their estimated value exceeds RSD 154 million.

The bridge is expected to connect the Backa Palanka area with the settlements of Nestin and Vizic, located on the right bank of the Danube. At present, residents of these villages must travel through Croatia, crossing an international border, in order to reach Bačka Palanka.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, with Roads of Serbia acting as the investor and Spanish company Centunion S.A. serving as the main contractor. The total investment is valued at EUR 129.93 million, excluding VAT, customs duties and import charges.

The Backa Palanka bridge forms part of State Road IB No. 19 (M-18) and will connect Backa Palanka with Nestin, Erdovik and Kuzmin, providing a route towards the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The planned structure consists of the central bridge span over the Danube navigation channel and approach viaducts on both the Backa and Srem sides.

The total length of the planned section is 3.35 kilometres, while the bridge itself will be 1,856 metres long. It will feature two traffic lanes and two pedestrian walkways, with a total width of 12 metres.

The project will be carried out in two phases.

The first phase, covering design, preparatory works, pile driving and foundation construction, is valued at just over EUR 21 million and, according to the ministry, will begin within 35 days of the contract entering into force.

The second phase, worth almost EUR 109 million, will include the construction of bridge piers, the steel superstructure, the bridge deck, access roads and associated infrastructure.
