The World Congress of Economists of the International Economic Association (IEA) begins today in Belgrade and runs until June 26. The Congress will gather more than 1,000 participants from all over the world, including Nobel Prize winners, at the Sava Center.

Leading world economists, economic policymakers, representatives of international organizations, central banks, governments, universities and the global business community have confirmed their attendance at the Congress.

The theme of the Congress is “Conflicting Visions of the World: Globalism versus Nationalism, Multilateralism versus Bilateralism and Democracy versus Autocracy”.

The program will cover issues of the contemporary global economy - from geopolitical changes, international trade and industrial policy, to inflation, monetary stability, artificial intelligence, the labor market and the future of the global economic order.

– The congress is being held for the first time in Serbia and for the first time in the region of Southeast Europe – said Aleksandar Vlahovic, president of the Serbian Association of Economists (SES), which is the organizer of the event.

During the five days of the 21st World Congress of Economists, there will be more than 200 panel discussions and 10 plenary sessions.

Outside the congress area, there will be a lecture by Eric Maskin at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and a lecture by Dani Rodrik at the Palace of Science, and a lecture by Jean Tirole in the main congress hall at the Sava Center.

More than 600 scientific papers will be presented at the congress.

The congress will also feature Nobel Prize winners in Economics Jean Tirole, Esther Duflo and Eric Maskin, as well as some of the most influential names in contemporary economic thought, including Dani Rodrik, Helene Rey, David Autor, Justin Yifu Lin, Jayati Ghosh, Gene Grossman, Arnaud Costinot, Ralph Ossa and many other professors and researchers from the world’s most prestigious universities and institutions.

The congress will also feature panels featuring representatives of economic institutions from Serbia and the region.

These include a panel dedicated to fiscal policy and financing sustainable development, featuring the participation of Serbian Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali, and a panel on monetary stability, featuring a speech by the Governor of the National Bank of Serbia, Jorgovanka Tabakovic.

The International Economic Association organizes the World Congress of Economists every three years. The previous congress was held in Medellin, Colombia, in 2023.
