New supercomputer launched at Kragujevac Data Center

New modules (supercomputer) and solar panels have been launched at the State Data Center in Kragujevac, which has allowed its capacity to be increased to 14 megawatts. The data center, which has two buildings with an area of about 14,000 square meters, was opened in December 2020 and stores data of all citizens and businesses, as well as commercial users, applying the highest security standards.

The center is home to the National Platform for Artificial Intelligence - a state-of-the-art supercomputer that has been given free use to universities, scientific institutes, faculties and domestic startup companies in science and technology parks.

The new supercomputer will be an upgrade of the existing one, which was purchased in 2021 and uses advanced Nvidia graphics chips, and has a speed of about five petaflops, which means that it is about 33,000 times faster than the average computer.

The launch of the second supercomputer was attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who said that no other country in the region had a data center like Serbia’s, developed with the support of the American company Nvidia, and that there were only about a dozen of them in the world. He said that the State Data Center would require additional amounts of electricity.

– With the launch of these modules, we are witnessing a historic moment today. The data center has the highest certificate, which means that it is unique in this part of Europe. This supercomputer is seven times faster than the previous one – said Vucic.

He pointed out that the confidence in the security of the data center was also evidenced by the fact that Oracle, Honeywell and many other world’s most powerful companies stored their data there.

By the end of this year, a third supercomputer for the State Data Center will be purchased from France, which should be expanded by 40 megawatts with further upgrades. Part of the complex is also a building intended for the needs of security institutions - the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security and Information Agency and the Serbian Armed Forces.

In the immediate vicinity of the Data Center there will be an innovation district, and the first building of that complex, which is part of a broader concept for developing the digital economy, will be completed by September 1st of this year. That building will house the National Center for Information Security.
