The installation of a second supercomputer is underway in Kragujevac, which will be connected to the existing one at the State Data Center. In April, a contract was signed with the French Eviden for the purchase of a third supercomputer - one of the most powerful in this part of Europe. Supercomputers have become a symbol of technological power - they shape the development of artificial intelligence, accelerate scientific discoveries and safeguard the information sovereignty of countries.

“El Capitan,” “Aurora,” “Lumi” - are the names of supercomputers that today shape science, economics and the global technological race.

In moments of geopolitical tension, supercomputers have become an instrument of sovereignty, technological independence and political power.

Serbia purchased its first modern supercomputer, located at the State Data Center in Kragujevac, in 2021. It is officially called the “National Platform for Artificial Intelligence.”

It uses advanced Nvidia graphics chips, and its speed is about five petaflops, which means it is about 33,000 times faster than the average computer.

– It has been four years since we installed the first supercomputer in the state Data Center in Kragujevac. It is used by 80 entities, 40 institutions from the academic community and 40 startup companies. The second supercomputer is already in Kragujevac and we expect installation and commissioning in the first four months of 2026. It has a seven times faster system than the existing one – said Bogdan Stesevic from the Office for IT and eGovernment.

At the beginning of the year, a purchase agreement for a new supercomputer was signed with France.

The contract worth EUR 50 million also includes purchases of new software, as well as the French model of generative artificial intelligence, “Mistral.”

Eviden’s supercomputer will have 20 times more superchips and almost 30 times more space for storing data than the existing one.

France, as the only nuclear power in the European Union, uses energy independence and cheap electricity to develop and power the most powerful supercomputers in Europe and has become a leader in the field of high technology - from the military industry to artificial intelligence.

High-tech cooperation has also been the focus of recent talks between the presidents of Serbia and France.

– We talked about cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. We are buying from the French, from PULS SAS, I think the company is called, a supercomputer that is very valuable for our country, which will be our second, and the only one of such value in Southeast Europe, along with 19 others, so there are 20 such computers in total in all of Europe – said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

The purchase of a new supercomputer is part of the Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Serbia for the period until 2030.
