Serbia already has one supercomputer that is being provided free of charge to all technical faculties, institutes, science and technology parks and startups. The installation of the second supercomputer is underway and will be put into operation in March 2026, while the third supercomputer will arrive at the end of 2026, announced Mihailo Jovanovic, Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.

– In terms of the power of supercomputers, Serbia will certainly be among the three or four strongest countries in Europe, but a major task remains - the application of artificial intelligence in as many sectors of society as possible. The implementation has already begun, through the intensive introduction of AI assistants, and Serbia was among the first in the region to launch the implementation of AI assistants in public services – Jovanovic told Blic.

The role of supercomputers in the 21st century, as Jovanovic says, is becoming increasingly important.

– Today, data is more valuable than oil, and once you have a large amount of data, by processing it on supercomputers in a very short period of time and using various algorithms, you can significantly improve many sectors of society. Today, the growth of gross domestic product is also being measured by the strength of a country when it comes to supercomputers. In a way, the sovereignty of a country is also measured by the possession of a supercomputer – he emphasizes.

Also, as he added, intensive application of AI assistants has begun in various sectors of society, including the first AI assistants in eGovernment, while in parallel the introduction of AI solutions in the scientific and technological community has been launched.

– So, already on the electronic government portal you can talk and communicate with artificial intelligence that helps you use electronic government services more easily. We will raise this on many other sites, including the “Svoj na svome” site that helps citizens register their rights to real estate as easily as possible – he emphasized.

Expansion in Belgrade, new Data Center in Nis

Next year, it is planned to start expanding the Data Center in Belgrade. This is the first data center, it is much smaller than the one in Kragujevac, but as Jovanovic says, a project to expand the Belgrade data center and build a new one in Nis is already underway.

– Namely, we are making a project to build a State Data Center in Nis. Of course, in the 21st century, the need for data centers and such capacities is incredible. Elektroprivreda Srbije must also support us in this construction, because data centers consume a significant amount of electricity, but I am optimistic that next year we will start expanding both the Belgrade data center and the new state data center – said Jovanovic.
