In addition to trains, Skoda also to produce trams tailored to Belgrade in Serbia

The Czech Skoda Group plans to produce not only electric trains in Serbia, but also trams tailored to Belgrade, it was confirmed to N1. For the implementation of the project, Skoda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the MIND Group company in Kragujevac, which strengthens its local presence and plans partial production of rail vehicles directly in Serbia.

Five years after the first announcements, when the then Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic promised in Prague to start tram production in Kragujevac, the cooperation has only now been formalized through a memorandum. Skoda has in the meantime presented its products to the Serbian authorities, GSP and the city of Belgrade, and is offering to deliver 25 RegioPanter electric trains within 24 months of signing the contract.

Skoda told N1 that the localization of production would include both trams and trains, with the trams being adapted to the needs of the capital. The company is the European leader in the production of narrow-gauge trams, with a market share of more than 35 percent, and the vehicles combine a low-floor design and the latest digital technologies for urban transport. Skoda’s electric trains also meet the standards for suburban, regional and cross-border transport.

Skoda explains that the localization of production in a new market is a complex project, depending on the volume of orders and investments, but that the company, together with MIND Group, remains committed to developing this project.

In addition, as stated, Skoda is also following the tender for the procurement of 60 new trolleybuses in Belgrade, but the company did not want to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
