Although the wines from the 13 Jul - Plantaže winery are recognized all over the region and the world, it is precisely the small family wineries that give the Montenegrin wine scene a special charm and authentic tone. They combine tradition and innovation, nurture autochthonous varieties and enable visitors to experience the true story of Montenegrin wine through tastings, harvesting or a visit to the vineyard.
Strond development potential
As the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro (PKCG) told eKapija, wine tourism in Montenegro has a continuous growth and an increasing recognition.
- Montenegro has strong potential thanks to the unique combination of climate, indigenous varieties such as Vranac and Kratošija, a small territory and a specific experience that tourists are increasingly looking for. Many vintners offer tourist tours through their vineyards, including wine tastings and tours of cellar complexes, with which visitors can learn about the production processes and the traditions behind Montenegrin wines - the Chamber said.
They state that the chances of development in the following years are very high, and a great comparative advantage is the possibility of systemically linking wine tourism with coastal, rural and cultural tourism.
- The increasing demand for authentic and sustainable tourist experiences favors Montenegro, which can offer a "boutique" and personalized approach. The biggest comparative advantages, compared to the region, are the small geographical distance between the sea, lake and vineyards, autochthonous grape varieties, the tradition of viticulture, as well as the authenticity and preservation of the natural environment - they say.

Family wineries are the ones that carry added value
Montenegro is recognized in the region and the world for the wines of the company 13. jul Plantaže. However, family wineries are also developing throughout the country, which occupy an increasingly important position when it comes to wine tourism.
- The company 13. jul Plantaže certainly represents the leader of the wine industry and a strong export brand, but it is precisely the small and family wineries that bring added value through authenticity, personalized experience and limited series of wines. In order to become a stronger part of the tourist offer, networking through wine routes and clusters, a joint approach to travel agencies and hotels, stronger digital promotion and online sales, standardization of the tourist offer, as well as export support is necessary, - said the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro, adding that their capacities can be better valorized through integration into national and regional tourism campaigns.
Although winemaking and viticulture has a centuries-old tradition in Montenegro, this sector is not without its challenges either. If we are talking about the development of wine tourism, the Chamber sees the infrastructure as one of the biggest obstacles.
- Here, above all, we mean the access roads to rural areas and wineries. Also, a significant challenge is the lack of personnel, especially in the segment of wine tourism, sommeliership and interpretation of wine culture. Improvement is also possible in the coordinated promotion of Montenegro as a wine destination, but also in administrative procedures that can be challenging for small producers - the Chamber of Commerce states, adding that systemic measures are required to overcome them.
- These are better connection of line ministries (tourism, agriculture, economy), subsidies and incentives for the development of tasting rooms and tourism infrastructure, development of specialized training programs. It is especially important to create a national strategy for wine tourism development.

International fairs as an opportunity to enter foreign markets
In order to promote and increase the visibility of Montenegrin wines, the Chamber of Commerce organized the visit of local winemakers to numerous international events. As they state, appearances at the common national exhibition space at international fairs such as Wine Vision in Belgrade and Pro Wein in Dusseldorf are extremely important for positioning Montenegrin wines on the international stage. Also, winemakers` visits to the world`s largest wine fairs, such as the one in Paris, were also organized.
- Exhibiting and visiting fairs contributes to establishing contacts with distributors and importers, exchanging knowledge and monitoring global trends in this area. Concrete business effects through new export arrangements, image strengthening and increased market interest are already being noticed. Continuity of participation is key to long-term results - they say.
The Chamber points out that the quality of wine tourism is certainly confirmed by quality awards which our producers have received at prestigious events such as: Decanter World WineAwards, Mundus Vini Spring, Concurs mundial, Emuzioni Dal Mondo, AWC Vienna, Balkans International wine competition, as well as the Novi Sad fair.
Some of the winemakers with whom eKapija spoke at the Wine Vision Fair in Belgrade also pointed out the importance of participating in such events.

Small wineries, big stories
Winery Đukanović is located in the village of Macuge in Crmnica, near Skadar Lake, in the most famous wine region in Montenegro. As Dušan Đukanović told eKapija, the Belgrade fair was an excellent opportunity to present the offer.
- At the Đukanović winery, we currently produce three labels - rosé, white wine, as well as Vranac, which is our autochthonous variety, which is what this region is known for. Two more labels are in preparation, which we plan to market in the coming period. During the fair, we made numerous contacts, both with visitors and distributors - he stated.
Wines from the Đukanović winery can be tasted in restaurants all over Montenegro, especially on the coast and Podgorica.
- We also have a tasting room within the winery itself, we are open for visits throughout the year and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy our wines - said Đukanović.
The wines of the Buk winery also arrived in Belgrade from Crmnica, and according to Miloš Rajković, the fair was an opportunity to make new contacts and try to find new markets.
- We have a wide range of wines, such as Chardonnay, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat Otonel as white varieties. We also have Vranac, Marselan, several coupages, but also sparkling wine made using the classic Šapmanja method - Rajković said.
The trademark of this winery is Marselan, and according to our interlocutor, they were among the first to produce this variety in the region, and over time they became recognizable for it. It was also the most sought-after wine in Belgrade.
Wines from the Buk winery can be found in some markets and selected restaurants.
- Our production is smaller, so we are more focused on direct sales in the winery. Nevertheless, we are present on the Montenegrin market - he states.
Talking about the situation on the Montenegrin wine scene, Rajković states that it is not easy for small producers.
- The market is very interesting, especially due to the tourist season and the coast, but the competition is strong. Small producers are waging a great struggle with imported wines, which are often backed by significant marketing investments from foreign countries and companies. The path to positioning in one`s own market is difficult, but if you have quality, you will always find your customer - he concludes.
Boutique family winery Bogojević is located in the town of Staniseljići, in Lješanska Nahija, near Podgorica. As Jovana Kentera Bogojević told eKapija, they have seven wine labels in their assortment, and since they are also a distillery, there are also three brands of brandy, while the fourth is in the process of production.
- We are particularly proud of the fact that we have finally managed to secure Montenegrin plums, as well as Montenegrin frankincense, which we will place on the domestic market next year - she stated.
He adds that, as a boutique winery, they have less production capacity, and are currently present exclusively on the Montenegrin market.
- Nevertheless, we hope that in the foreseeable future we will be able to present ourselves on the Serbian market as well. This is precisely why we are here - looking for distributors for Serbia - said Kentera Bogojević.
As a Montenegrin winery, they offer several red wine labels.
- As our premium wine, I would single out "Bogdan". It is a wine that has been awarded with a silver medal at the Decanter competition for several years in a row. It is a blend of four varieties, barrique wine. We offer two more blends, mainly based on Vranac, an autochthonous Montenegrin variety - she said.
The wines of the Bogojević winery can be found in some prominent restaurants and markets.
- However, what we love most is for guests to visit us in our winery and "House of Wine". There we can present our labels in the best way, and guests can enjoy the gastronomic tastes of Montenegro. It is advisable to schedule visits, but the door of our house is always open for all visitors, so they are welcome even without notice.

Connecting regions through "Balkan wine experience"
In addition to collective performances at international events and fairs, the Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro supports winemakers through the organization of B2B meetings with foreign partners, initiatives for the improvement of the regulatory framework, but also educational workshops and seminars, as well as the promotion of domestic products through national campaigns.
- There is a special focus on small producers who need institutional support the most to enter foreign markets - they say.
When asked about the importance of regional cooperation in promoting wine tourism, the Chamber says that it is extremely important for strengthening the visibility of the Balkans as a wine region.
- Initiatives such as joint wine routes or branding of the "Balkan wine experience" concept could significantly contribute to the increase in the number of tourists interested in wine tourism. Through cooperation with the countries of the region, it is possible to create integrated tourist packages that would connect wineries, gastronomy and cultural heritage, which would increase competitiveness in relation to Western European wine destinations - concludes the Chamber of Commerce for eKapija.
