Belgrade Bypass Route: Truck tolls to start in April – By year-end, trucks to also pay on motorways and IB-grade roads

The plan is to launch a toll collection system for trucks on the Belgrade Bypass Route in April, announced Assistant Minister for Road Transport, Roads and Traffic Safety Miroslav Alempic. By the end of the year, this innovation should also be introduced on a large number of sections on motorways and IB-grade roads, he added.

– This will bring additional funds that will enable us to maintain roads. We are also doing a lot of new road-building, but as we add new roads, they also need to be maintained. If you don’t maintain them well enough, the need for maintenance is much greater every year. It’s not even twice as high, it’s exponential – he said at a session of the Committee on Spatial Planning, Transport, Infrastructure and Telecommunications of the Serbian Parliament.

Alempic stressed that the state was aware that it was not easy to cope with that expense, which was nevertheless necessary “because we want to build new roads.” According to him, this toll collection for trucks would be done via TAG devices and the law on freight transport, as well as the law on the collection of these fees, already proscribe an obligation for trucks over 3.5 tons to have tags, while trucks in international transport all already have tags.

Alempic added that the goal was to abolish toll stations and to record everything by recording license plates with cameras because, as he emphasized, “it is a system that works.” He stated that there were 24 companies in Serbia that dealt with road maintenance and that they were all divided into regions and that each was responsible for a certain part.
