Vucic on NIS sanctions: We will talk to the Russians, we have nothing more to discuss with the US

Serbia will have to find a way to solve the NIS problem, we will have to talk to the Russians who are the majority owners of the company, said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic regarding the US sanctions on NIS that will come into force tomorrow.

– I hope that the company will not lay off a large number of workers, but we will see. In any case, we will talk to the Russians about everything, because now we have nothing more to discuss with the Americans – said Vucic.

According to him, the US has “pushed its agenda,” and Europe will support the US sanctions.

– I am quite sure that after a short time, JANAF will also stop supplying oil – said Vucic.

As another problem, he mentioned the financial and banking problem, adding that “there is no bank that will not want to avoid US sanctions.” Domestic banks in Serbia, he added, will be able to hold out for a few days longer, but “they won’t want to go bankrupt or disappear because of these sanctions either.”

– We will have countless problems, that means you can’t pay your workers, you can’t pay anything, parts for the refinery... We will have to see how to solve it – said Vucic.

He stated that they had been searching for a solution for months, but that none of them “was good enough for our partners and friends.”

– Not because we are greedy or arrogant, but because everyone is firm in their positions and no one wanted to leave them, and few were interested in Serbia’s position - either of them. We will certainly get the short end of the stick, without having done anything wrong – assessed Vucic.
