Overall external trade of Serbia in first seven months EUR 43.7 billion – Biggest deficit with China

The overall external trade in the Republic of Serbia for the period January - July 2025 amounted to EUR 43.7 billion, which was an increase of 9.5% compared to the same period last year. The value of exports amounted to EUR 19.3 billion, which was a 9.8% increase, compared to the same period last year. The value of imports amounted to EUR 24.4 billion, which was a 9.3% increase when compared to the same period last year, announced the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia.

The deficit amounted to EUR 5.1 billion, which was an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period last year. The export-import coverage ratio equaled 79.1% and was higher if compared to the same period last year when it was 78.8%. Observed by regions, the largest share in exports of Serbia was noted in the Vojvodina Region (32.6%), followed by the Belgrade Region (22.5%), the South and East Serbia Region (22%), the Sumadija and West Serbia Region (21.5%), and approximately 1.5% of total exports is not classified by territories. The greatest share in imports of Serbia was noted in the Belgrade Region (45%), followed by the Vojvodina Region (30.8%), the Sumadija and West Serbia Region (13.4%), the South and East Serbia Region (8.9%), and approximately 1.9% of total imports is not classified by territories. Data on Kosovo and Metohija are not available.

The external trade in the reference period noted the highest level with the counties with which Serbia has signed agreements on free trade. European Union member states account for 58.2% of total external trade. The main external trade partners, individually, were Germany, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China and Hungary (exports), that is, China, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Turkey (imports).

Our second major partner refers to the CEFTA countries, with a surplus resulting from the exports of cereals and produces thereof, road vehicles, oil and oil derivatives, beverages, medical and pharmaceutical products. Exports amounted to EUR 2.8 billion and imports to EUR 1.19 billion (the surplus amounted to EUR 1.6 billion and the export-import coverage ratio equaled 237.9%).

Observed by countries, the largest surplus in the external trade was gained with the surrounding countries: Montenegro (exports of electricity and retail trade medicaments and imports of electricity and dried pork), Bosnia and Herzegovina (exports mostly related to gas oils and electricity, and imports to electricity and lignite, not agglomerated) and the Republic of North Macedonia (exports of electricity and electric conductors; imports of electricity and supported catalysts). Regarding other countries, surplus was also noted in the trade with Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania… The greatest deficit marked the trade with China (due to imports of phones for network stations), followed by trade with Turkey, Kazakhstan, Italy, the Russian Federation, Hungary…
