Serbia plans to build two new gas pipelines in next three years

Serbia plans to build two new gas pipelines in the next three years, which will connect us to North Macedonia and Romania. With the support of the EU, the gas interconnection with North Macedonia will enable a connection to the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TAP), which will give us another connection route to the Southern Gas Corridor and the LNG terminal in Greece, while at the same time connecting us to the BRUA gas pipeline and gas sources from neighboring Romania, said Acting Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy for Oil and Gas Sasa Kokovic at the "Energy Week" in Baku, Azerbaijan.

He noted that a developed energy infrastructure was a prerequisite for a secure supply of natural gas.

– The development of gas infrastructure is of great importance for Serbia. At the end of 2023, we completed the construction of the gas interconnection between Serbia and Bulgaria and contracted natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, thus diversifying our supply for the first time, ensuring the flow of gas from the Caspian Sea and connecting to the Southern Gas Corridor, which is one of the largest gas projects in the world in the last decade – said Kokovic at a panel dedicated to ensuring energy security through resilient infrastructure.

He added that countries in Europe, due to greater energy security, were working more intensively on expanding storage capacities.

– The expansion of the underground gas storage facility in Banatski Dvor is our strategic interest, with which we will expand storage capacities in the country by the end of next year – he said.

He pointed out that just as Serbia was working on building new gas routes, diversification in crude oil supply was also progressing.

– By the end of 2027, we plan to connect to Hungary, from where we will have another supply route, in addition to the existing Janaf oil pipeline, which will achieve greater energy security – said Kokovic.

On the sidelines of the “Energy Week”, Kokovic spoke with representatives of the Azerbaijani energy company SOCAR about the project to build a gas power plant in Nis.
