The long-announced expansion of the Banatski Dvor gas storage has begun. It is necessary for a secure supply – not just due to the growth of consumption in the industry, but also because of the higher number of connected households.

The Banatski Dvor storage is the only one in Serbia, and its capacity is now being doubled. It will have another 12 boreholes, and the procurement of the equipment has already been contracted. The carriers of the job are the shareholders of Banatski Dvor, Srbijagas and Gazprom.

The minister of mining and energy in a technical mandate, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, says that the total value of the investment is EUR 145 million.

The capacities will expand up to 750 million cubic meters of gas. So far, we have been storing in the existing storage facilities of Banatski Dvor and, thanks to storage sites in Hungary, got to additional capacities. Thanks to this investment as well, we will considerably raise the level of gas reserves in our country. And that means that we can react in the case of unforeseen situations – said Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic.

Dusan Bajatovic, the director of Srbijagas, says that the financial funds have been secured with the support of the Government of Serbia through Srbijagas.

– We will credit that. And it will not have a significant impact on burdening the end-users in the sense of tariffs, so we can be satisfied with that agreement. The deadline for the completion of the job is the end of 2026. NIS will establish the boreholes, we will do the rest together with our Russian colleagues, but also some European and American installers of equipment – says Bajatovic.

In addition to a safe supply of the Russian gas via the Balkan Stream, Serbia also receives gas from Azerbaijan.

– Of course, we aim to further diversify the sources of gas supply, we have done so with the completion of the construction of the interconnection between Serbia and Bulgaria, we will continue with North Macedonia, with Romania, and through the project of the realization of additional gas storage – says Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic.

The whole Europe is trying to get to new gas sources. Brussels has announced that, as soon as the end of this month, the members will start filling the storage facilities for the next winter. And while the prices of oil are dropping, the gas prices remain high precisely due to the big demand.
