Djedovic: We expect the memorandum on the construction of a gas power plant near Nis to be signed soon

The construction of a gas power plant near Nis is of strategic importance for Serbia and I expect the memorandum with the Azerbaijani side regarding this to be signed soon, stated the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, who talked to the deputy minister of economy of Azerbaijan, Anar Akhundov, and a top-level delegation of the Azerbaijani energy company Socar about the cooperation on this project of the construction of a gas power plant in Serbia.

The minister emphasized that, through a dialogue of the ministries and the energy companies – EPS, Srbijagas and Socar, the next steps on the joint project will be defined.

She said that the construction of the gas power plant near Nis was recognized in the new Energy Development Strategy and the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan as one of the priority projects.

– This project is also important from the angle of securing base energy and a greater supply security, but also as a step forward in the strategic partnership of our two countries in gas supply, which we started in 2023 by securing gas deliveries from Azerbaijan – said Djedovic, as announced by the ministry.

The Energy Development Strategy until 2040 says that “the construction of a gas power plant in the Nis area” is possible, with a capacity of 150 MW of electrical and 100 MW of heating energy, whereas the value of the project is estimated at EUR 250 million.
