The PUE Belgrade Heating Plants has issued a tender for the construction of a deep exploratory well at the Batajnica heating plant site, with the goal of utilizing geothermal resources and potentially integrating them into the capital's district heating system.

This heating plant/boiler facility was selected as the primary and most promising location for the application of geothermal energy (GTE) within the Belgrade Heating Plants system. The exploratory work aims to determine the lithological composition of the terrain, confirm the presence of productive aquifers and define the hydrogeological properties of the rock formations at this site.

The technical specifications call for the drilling of one exploratory well to a depth of 1,500 meters. Based on geological data for this part of the Pannonian Basin, two types of geothermal reservoirs are expected at the site:

• Within Neogene sediments: water temperatures are expected to range between 70°C and 90°C.
• Within Mesozoic formations (Triassic limestones): projected temperatures range from 100°C to 120°C.

The drilling process must utilize a core-drilling method (wireline system).

As the Batajnica heating plant complex borders a residential area, the documentation includes operational rules regarding noise levels: at the boundary between the heating plant complex and the residential area, noise levels must not exceed a limit of 45 dBA. Furthermore, regarding waste management, the contractor is required to continuously remove drilling mud and excavated material from the site at their own expense.

The scope of work also includes the preparation of the execution design.

The tender is open until November 9, and more details (in Serbian) can be found HERE.
