World Bank loan approved for project in Serbia – EUR 175 million for first section of Nis-Velika Plana gas pipeline

A World Bank loan of EUR 175 million has been approved for the construction of the first phase of gas infrastructure in Serbia, announced Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, Minister of Mining and Energy.

The project entails the construction of the first section of the Nis-Velika Plana gas pipeline and aims to eliminate existing bottlenecks in Serbia’s gas system.

According to Djedovic Handanovic, the project’s implementation should enable access to natural gas from various supply sources, improve the transmission network, and enhance supply security and resilience.

The Minister also addressed the views of environmental organizations that had advocated for postponing the construction of new gas infrastructure.

– This is not about increasing fossil fuel consumption, but rather about modernizing and strengthening the existing system while supporting the energy transition – Djedovic Handanovic stated on Instagram.
