Turkish investor launching construction of Serbia’s largest solar power plant – 300 MWp package including new project

The Turkish company Fortis Energy has officially brought its two major solar projects in Serbia to the “ready-to-build” stage.

Multi-year administrative processes have been completed, permits obtained, land rights secured, and grid connection agreements finalized, officially moving the investment into the equipment procurement and construction phase.

Established facility and new project in portfolio

In addition to the well-known “Nocaj” mega-project - set to become Serbia’s largest solar power plant - the company has used this announcement to publicly unveil the “Green” project for the first time.

The total generation capacity the Turkish investor is launching in Serbia amounts to 300 MWp:

– Nocaj Solar Power Plant (270 MWp) – the cornerstone of the investment, located in Sremska Mitrovica (near the village of Drenovac). This project will also integrate a massive battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 72 MWh. Commercial operation is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

– Green Solar Power Plant (30 MWp) – this project is scheduled to come online much sooner, as early as the fourth quarter of 2027. The exact location has not been disclosed.

Together, these two facilities will supply more than 368 GWh of clean electricity annually to the domestic grid.

Battery system and domestic grid stabilization

The installation of the 72 MWh energy storage system at Nocaj is part of the “Green Baseload” strategy. Batteries will store excess solar energy during the day and discharge it during the evening peak in consumption. This directly addresses the issues of price volatility and the stability of the Serbian power grid, transforming variable solar energy into stable, baseload power.

This investment is part of a broader plan by Fortis Energy, a company whose development portfolio in Serbia already includes five solar power plants and four wind farms.

Albania included in same investment package

This wave of investment in Serbia is part of a larger package comprising 375 MWp of solar capacity and 112 MWh of storage that Fortis is developing across Southeast Europe. The remainder of the investment is located in Albania, where construction is commencing on the Erseke solar power plant (75 MWp), featuring a 40 MWh battery system. Across the region (Serbia and Albania), the facilities will supply approximately 494 GWh of green electricity annually - enough to meet the consumption needs of 141,000 households - and reduce CO2 emissions by 317,000 tons per year.
