Turkey’s Fortis Energy receives permit to build 36 MWh battery system for SPP Nocaj 1 in Sremska Mitrovica – Installation to begin in Q2

Fortis Energy continues to develop the Nocaj solar complex project in Sremska Mitrovica, by introducing a battery storage system.

According to ESS News, a specialized energy storage media within the pv magazine group, Fortis Energy has received a permit to build a 36 MWh battery storage system at the Nocaj1 solar plant and plans to begin installation in Q2 2026.

The battery system will be integrated with a 90 MW solar power plant, giving the project a hybrid character. This phase is the first step in the company’s broader investment plan, which includes the development of a total of 270 MW of solar capacity with energy storage, including the Nocaj1 and Nocaj 2 projects, as well as a previously acquired 180 MW solar site in the same region.

As a reminder, in early 2026, the Nocaj 1 solar power plant project near Sremska Mitrovica was confirmed to have entered the concrete implementation phase, after the EPC contract for the construction of one of the largest solar power plants in Serbia was signed.

The information is an official stock exchange announcement by the Turkish company Kontrolmatik, which signed a contract with the project investor, Fortis Renewable Energy BV. The contract relates to the design, procurement and construction of a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 90 MW, as well as the integration of a battery system for energy storage with a capacity of 36 MWh.

The Turkish company Kontrolmatik Technologies has been engaged to design and build the plant, while its specialized subsidiary Pomega Energy Storage Technologies will provide the battery solution.

As reported by ESS News, Fortis Energy has also secured approval for connection to the electricity grid with a capacity of 180 MW, which is an important technical prerequisite for the further implementation of the project.

The development of the Nocaj solar complex comes as Serbia accelerates its energy transition and increases the share of renewable energy sources, with an increasing focus on large-scale solar plants and energy storage systems to support grid stability.
