Serbia starts construction of one of largest solar parks in Europe – Fortis contracts construction of Nocaj 1 near Sremska Mitrovica

In early 2026, it was confirmed that the Nocaj 1 solar power plant project near Sremska Mitrovica would enter the concrete implementation phase, after the EPC contract for the construction of one of the largest solar power plants in Serbia was signed.

The information is an official stock exchange announcement by the Turkish company Kontrolmatik, which signed a contract with the project investor, Fortis Renewable Energy BV. The contract relates to the design, procurement and construction of a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 90 MW, as well as the integration of a battery system for energy storage with a capacity of 36 MWh.

The Nocaj 1 project is thus ranked among the most significant current investments in the field of renewable energy sources in Serbia, with particular importance for the development of electricity storage systems.

The project also includes the delivery of a battery energy storage system, which will be implemented by Pomega Enerji Depolama Teknoloji A.S, a company specializing in energy storage technologies and a member of the Kontrolmatik Group.

The Nocaj 1 project fits into Fortis’s previously announced solar portfolio of approximately 270 MW, which also includes the Nocaj 2 solar power plant.

As a reminder, the Netherlands-based Fortis Energy purchased a 180 MW solar project with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Sremska Mitrovica in the summer of 2024.

The company stated that it was expected to be one of the largest solar power plants and energy storage systems in Southeast Europe with a capacity of 36 MWh.

In September last year, it was announced that Fortis would begin building a solar power plant in Sremska Mitrovica in the spring, on private land on the Macva side, on the road to Drenovac, for which a building permit had already been obtained.

The Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Branislav Nedimovic, stated that the solar park would be built on 300 hectares of private land in Macva and that it would have 270 megawatts of installed capacity, which is as much as one fifth of the installed capacity of Djerdap.

– Therefore, we can say that this will be one of the five largest projects of this kind in Europe – said Nedimovic.

In May, Fortis signed a contract for the connection of the planned Erdevik solar park in the municipality of Sid, which borders Sremska Mitrovica. The planned installed capacity is 110 MW, with a BESS system with a capacity of 31.2 MWh.

This company is already developing three wind farm projects in Serbia - in Jagodina, Petrovac and Vranje, with a total capacity of 481 MW, and also owns five biogas plants with a total capacity of 21 MW.
