Wizz Air calls on Serbia to protect competitive aviation market and ensure fair conditions for all airlines

Wizz Air has called on Serbian authorities to protect an open and competitive aviation market and ensure fair and transparent conditions for all airlines.

– This summer has shown what Serbia gains from connectivity. Together, we should protect this success, not question it. Wizz Air remains committed to Serbia and will continue its dialogue with the Serbian authorities to find a solution that protects connectivity, choice for consumers, jobs and the wider Serbian economy – the company said.

Wizz Air believes that the regulatory changes planned by the Serbian authorities could jeopardize the viability of its base in Belgrade and ultimately lead to a reduction in the connectivity currently available to Serbian passengers.

The potential consequences, the company said, go beyond Wizz Air.

– Reducing the number of Wizz Air operations could mean fewer direct routes and flight frequencies, less choice for consumers, potentially higher ticket prices, fewer visitors to Serbia, as well as a risk to jobs, both within the airline itself and in the wider tourism and aviation industry. The public reaction shows how important this issue is to the citizens of Serbia. A petition has been signed by 25,000 people, calling for the preservation of Wizz Air’s base and operations in Belgrade – the company said in a statement.

Wizz Air notes that, as the summer season draws to a close, its operations are making a significant contribution to Serbia’s connectivity with Europe, tourism and the economy.

– During June, July and August, Wizz Air operated more than 3,000 flights to and from Serbia, carrying 700,000 passengers. For hundreds of thousands of passengers, these flights meant affordable vacations, visits to family and friends, business or study trips, as well as maintaining direct connections between Serbia and Europe. However, the importance of this connection goes beyond the number of passengers on the planes. Wizz Air’s operations support more than 200 direct jobs in Serbia, as well as thousands of additional jobs in the aviation industry, tourism, hospitality, transport and other parts of the economy. During the summer season alone, Wizz Air, through its operations and the passengers it carried, made an estimated contribution to the Serbian economy of several hundred million euros – the company emphasizes.
