Representatives of the Hungarian company Wizz Air submitted more than 21,000 citizens' requests to the Civil Aviation Directorate calling for the preservation of the company's operational base in Belgrade, while urging dialogue with the relevant state institutions.

- We are asking for Wizz Air to be allowed to continue operating in Belgrade without disruption, as its operations, after 15 years of business, are now under threat - said Nevena Todorovic, Wizz Air's Cabin Crew Base Manager in Belgrade.

She added that the company wants to continue operating in Belgrade, but that due to amendments to the rulebook governing the issuance of permits to foreign air carriers for international public air transport services to and from Serbia, adopted by the Directorate in March this year, 200 employees could lose their jobs.

- The amendments to the rulebook prevent companies registered in the EU from starting and ending their flights in Belgrade, allowing only aircraft to depart from EU countries and return to those countries - she said.

She stressed that the company operates in accordance with local aviation laws. She stated that so far only one meeting has been held between the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority and the Civil Aviation Directorate of Serbia, and that they therefore wish to continue the dialogue in order to reach a mutual agreement.

The Civil Aviation Directorate previously announced that the amendments to the rulebook, which are due to enter into force in November 2026, do not constitute a restriction of traffic rights, but rather regulate the regulatory framework, which is applied equally to all air carriers operating in the Serbian market.
