Preparatory works to begin on new bridge over Danube near Backa Palanka in coming days

Work on the bridge over Backa Palanka is expected to begin in the coming days, announced Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and this announcement came just a month after the Department of Urban Planning of the Backa Palanka Municipality issued a temporary construction permit for preparatory works for the construction of a bridge over the Danube near Backa Palanka.

The preparatory works are worth more than 154 million dinars and include the arrangement of a 440-meter-long access road, earthworks and preparation of the terrain for the construction of the bridge. Previously, on November 3, 2022, an agreement on economic and technical cooperation in the field of infrastructure was concluded between the Government of Serbia and the Government of Spain, and at the end of last year, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure signed a commercial agreement with the PE Roads of Serbia and the Spanish company Centunion.

The length of the designed section is 3,352 meters, and the bridge will be 1,856 meters long and will consist of three main parts: the access viaduct on the Backa Palanka side, the main bridge and the access viaduct on the Nestin side. Two traffic lanes and two pedestrian paths are planned, with a total width of 12 meters. The bridge near Backa Palanka is part of the first B-class state road 19 (M-18), a connection with the state road number 12 Nestin - Erdevik - Kuzmin - the state border with Bosnia and Herzegovina (border crossing Sremska Raca). It will consist of the central part of the bridge over the Danube waterway and the access parts of the bridge on the Backa and Srem sides.

With the construction of the new bridge, Backa and Srem, as well as western Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina, would be even better connected, exclusively through the territory of Serbia, and the costs of transporting people and goods would be reduced. More importantly, this project will change the daily lives of the people of Backa Palanka, especially the residents of the Srem villages of Nestin and Vizic, which belong to the Backa Palanka Municipality, and who can only reach their municipality through Croatia, crossing the border at Ilok in Vukovar-Srem County, while the only connection with Backa Palanka is the bridge between this city and Ilok.

As stated on the website of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, the first phase of works on the bridge includes design, preparatory works, pile driving and foundation works.

The second phase includes all remaining works (including, among others, concrete pillars, steel structure, bridge pavement structure, access roads, drainage and installations).
