Government allocates 15.23 billion dinars for new bridge from Backa Palanka to Nestin

The budget of the municipality of Backa Palanka for 2026 has reached 2.87 billion dinars and it envisages several projects, but the most important and expensive project in this municipality will be financed by the state, and it is the bridge between Backa Palanka and Nestin, which has been announced for years.

As stated by the mayor of the municipality of Backa Palanka, Branislav Susnica, this project was on the list of priority projects in the Serbian budget for 2026 and the Serbian government is allocating 15.23 billion dinars for it.

– In addition to shortening travel time and making life easier for the residents of Nestin and Vizic, the bridge will be the shortest connection of the northwestern part of Vojvodina with the Belgrade - Zagreb highway and the closest possible connection with the Republika Srpska via the Sremska Raca border crossing. In addition to the bridge, an additional impetus and additional guarantee of development will be the new expressway from Backa Palanka to the E-75 highway near Novi Sad, which as part of the European corridor represents the main traffic corridor through our country – said Susnica, as reported by the Dnevnik newspaper.

Let us remind that this summer, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic indicated that the contract with the Spanish company Centurion for the construction of a new bridge in Backa Palanka would be worth around EUR 126 million.

Concrete steps towards the implementation of this infrastructure project began with the Spanish in 2023, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure and the Spanish company Centunion. At that time, it was announced that the new bridge would be 1,915 meters long, with the construction of access roads on both sides.

In August of this year, the Government of Serbia decided to establish a working group to negotiate and agree on the implementation of the Project for the construction of a bridge with access roads on the Danube River near Backa Palanka, namely for the bridge that will be built on part of the territory of the cadastral municipality of Nestin and the cadastral municipality of Backa Palanka city.

The bridge over the Danube should be a connection from Backa Palanka to Nestin, which, together with another Fruska Gora village – Vizic, belongs to this municipality and is located in Srem. The construction of this bridge, which would connect the Backa and Srem sides of the Backa Palanka municipality, was announced more than ten years ago in the local parliament.

The residents of these two Srem villages can currently only reach Backa Palanka via Croatia, crossing the border near Ilok in Vukovar-Srem County. For now, their only connection to Backa Palanka is the bridge between this city and Ilok. In addition to the ups and downs due to border controls and detentions, farmers are particularly at risk, as they have not been able to transport their products across the bridge between Ilok and Backa Palanka since Croatia joined the EU.
