This is a part of the main railroad line that connects the Belgrade rail junction with Corridor X. Today, the line is single-track and intended exclusively for freight traffic.
Freight trains travel on it at an average speed of only 30 km/h, while its capacity is about 25 trains per day.
The plan is being developed by JUGINUS d.o.o. - Yugoslav Institute for Urban Planning and Housing, while the Secretariat for Urban Planning and Construction of the City of Belgrade is responsible for the development.
The plan envisages the reconstruction and extension of the existing route with a second track, while increasing the designed train speed to up to 120 km/h. The solution is based on the Preliminary Design developed in 2025 by the IPF10 PLANET Consortium and Egis Belgrade, which includes the section from Ostruznica to Batajnica with a total length of 23.8 km.
There are currently two freight stations on the route - Ostruznica with four tracks and Surcin with five tracks. Both stations will be reconstructed and extended with new facilities and equipment necessary for rail traffic. A connection to the airport is also planned in Surcin.
One of the most significant projects will be the construction of a new rail bridge over the Sava, almost 700 meters long, which will replace the existing bridge. The new bridge will have a larger navigable opening and a smaller number of pillars in the riverbed, and will be built in phases so that rail traffic can operate smoothly. The existing bridge over the Galovica Canal is also planned to be replaced.
The plan also includes improving safety at rail-road crossings. There are currently seven grade crossings and eight level crossings on the section. All existing grade crossings will be retained, and one new one will be built. Of the eight existing level crossings, five will be removed, two reconstructed, and one new crossing will be built between Jakovo and Surcin.
The designers emphasize that the new track will be built mainly on the eastern side of the existing railroad in order to minimize additional land acquisition and impact on populated areas. Most of the corridor expansion is planned on agricultural land.
