Vucic: Serbia should increase electricity production through RES and nuclear energy

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said yesterday that Serbia should increase electricity production through renewable sources, both wind and solar, as well as nuclear, but stressed that in the meantime, reliance on gas from Azerbaijan was of key importance. Addressing participants at the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Vucic said that he looked forward to cooperating with his friends from Azerbaijan on the construction of a gas-fired power plant near Nis in the near future.

Stressing that the WUF was an opportunity to discuss the challenges and enormous opportunities of urbanization, Vucic said that more than half of the global community lived in cities, which were drivers of economic growth, production, innovation, education and learning, digitalization and artificial intelligence.

He pointed to problems in cities such as overpopulation, pollution, traffic, waste, as well as crime, corruption and human trafficking, which were more prevalent in cities and less in rural areas.

– I propose that we focus on issues of sustainability, inclusiveness and innovation – Vucic told the WUF participants, adding that urban spaces had to be accessible to all.

He said that smart cities were the future and that technology and AI could provide solutions to problems in cities, but he also warned of the challenges that such solutions brought.

– It is necessary to invest in decarbonization, adaptation to climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources – said the Serbian president.

Addressing the participants of the forum in Baku, Vucic said that he was looking forward to the opportunity to see them at the Expo 2027 special exhibition in Belgrade.
