New facilities and new capacities in Port of Prahovo – Construction of administration building begins, value of first phase of modernization and expansion of port complex EUR 45 million

The construction of the administration building, a business facility intended for all institutions operating within the border crossing and port zone - from port services, river shipping and freight forwarding, to customs, the port authority and border police - has begun in the Port of Prahovo. The work on the administration building, which is to be completed in two years, is being carried out as part of the first phase of the modernization and expansion of the port complex, within which EUR 45 million will be invested from the state budget.

Part of the work within this phase is the filling of the winter storage area, which provides 3.2 hectares of new storage space within the port complex.

As stated by Ranko Sekularac, State Secretary at the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, the project for the development of the Port of Prahovo began several years ago through the planning and design phases.

- The project started five or six years ago in terms of planning, and the implementation began with the signing of a contract with the contractor at the end of 2024, and a few months later with supervision, and essentially in July 2025. As for this year, we have reached about 30% physical and 33% financial implementation – said Sekularac.

According to him, with the planned expansion of capacities, the Port of Prahovo will significantly increase the volume of transshipment in the coming period.

– The planned expansion will result in the transshipment of over 3.2 million tons of goods per year, and the goal is for the port to be fully functional almost all year round – emphasized Sekularac.

He also pointed out the importance of accompanying infrastructure projects, primarily the planned construction of a bypass around Negotin and the reconstruction of the railroad, which would further improve the functioning of the port and traffic safety.

– It is important that all projects are developed and implemented in a synchronized manner – said Sekularac.

The Port of Prahovo handles a variety of cargo, including grain, sand, gravel, raw materials and various piece goods. The first phase of the works includes the opening of a winter storage facility that has been neglected for decades, with the implementation of the latest sustainable and green solutions. In addition, as previously announced, the first green terminal in Serbia will be established for the collection of hazardous materials from ships, which has not existed before.

The plan, as indicated last summer, is for the Port of Prahovo to be a multimodal terminal, as talks will be resumed with the Bulgarian side on the construction of a railroad branch with a total length of 30 kilometers, of which two kilometers are on the Serbian side, with the Mokranje border crossing, which would enable the transport of goods and services when the Danube water level is low or navigation is difficult.

The location conditions for the phased reconstruction and expansion of existing facilities and the construction of new capacities of the Port of Prahovo were issued by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure on April 9, 2021, and the decision on the construction permit was issued by this ministry on April 18, 2022. The planning basis consists of the Detailed Regulation Plan “Port of Prahovo” and the Amendments to the Detailed Regulation Plan “Port of Prahovo”. Part of the technical documentation for the execution of the works was also an amendment to the project for the construction permit.
