Serbia has recognized hydrogen as one of the energy sources in the Energy Development Strategy until 2040 and is currently working on developing a program for its development in the country, emphasized Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic. The state, as she said, sees the application of green hydrogen in the industrial and transport sectors.

At the opening of the international conference “Green Hydrogen as a Roadmap for Energy Transition,” she pointed out that Serbia was working on preparing a legislative framework and that in that process the country relied on the support of the European Union.

– The project Green Hydrogen Development Strategy and Removal of Regulatory Obstacles has been approved within the framework of the European Union program and we are currently working on developing a hydrogen development program, but as we said, on a comprehensive strategy as well. The aim of this process is to establish a modern regulatory framework that will cover the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen, but also to ensure compliance with European standards and regulations – Djedovic Handanovic emphasized.

She also emphasized that in parallel with the development of regulations, they also had to work on practice.

– In this sense, we have embarked on the development of pilot projects that should enable the acquisition of practical experience and the development of domestic capacities. With the support of the European Union, a project for a demonstration plant for the production and storage of hydrogen is also being developed at the Vinca Institute. This project aims to develop domestic capacities and knowledge in the field of integrating hydrogen into the electricity system, especially in the context of balancing production from variable energy sources – she noted.
