Revitalization of Bajina Basta Hydroelectric Power Plant completed, project worth EUR 35 million

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic stated that the revitalization of the Bajina Basta Hydroelectric Power Plant had been completed, that the second unit had been connected to the grid and that it contributed to Serbia’s energy security, the ministry announced.

Djedovic Handanovic, after visiting Serbia’s only reversible hydropower plant, reminded that it had been put into operation in 1982 and that it had now been renovated for the first time, which had extended the service life of the units and ensured their greater reliability and efficiency.

She emphasized that it was one of the most important projects of Elektroprivreda Srbije, worth around EUR 35 million, which had involved extensive work on the modernization of the units, electrical equipment and control systems, as well as a major overhaul of the supply and discharge tunnel, about eight kilometers long.

According to her, the importance of the only pumped storage power plant in Serbia is not only reflected in the production of electricity, but above all in its role in ensuring the stability and balancing of the electricity system.

– It is a kind of energy battery of Serbia, because it enables covering peak consumption and a quick reaction in the event of sudden disruptions in production or a sudden increase in electricity consumption, explained the minister and pointed out that the importance of the Bajina Basta RHPP was invaluable at a time when renewable energy sources whose production was variable were developing – it is announced.
