Two billion euros for hydro sector in next 10 years

In the next 10 years, investments of around EUR 2 billion are planned in the hydro sector, and planned investments in hydropower plants in the next three years are around EUR 760 million, of which around EUR 470 million for new projects, said Radovan Stanic, Assistant General Director of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) for Operations at the conference “The Importance of Hydropower Plants for the Energy Transition.”

As he stated, hydropower is the largest stable renewable source in our system and ensures continuity of production and security of supply, which is a prerequisite for the gradual reduction of the share of coal.

– In addition, HPPs have a unique role in maintaining balance stability - they can react quickly, monitor the variability of wind and sun and compensate for their oscillations. We have completed the revitalization of “Bajina Basta,” “Djerdap 1,” “Zvornik,” a major revitalization of the reversible “Bajina Basta” is underway, the revitalization of “Vlasina HPPs” has begun, and preparations are underway for the modernization of “Bistrica,” the construction of the 4th unit in the HPP “Potpec” – he said, as announced by EPS.

Milan Aleksic, Advisor to the Minister for Capital Projects at the Ministry of Mining and Energy, pointed out that HPPs played an important role, and that reversible HPPs played the most important role in the energy transition.

– Our obligation is to reconstruct existing HPPs and build new ones. Investments are key to ensuring energy security, and the RHPP “Bistrica” is a strategic project, with a capacity of about 660 megawatts, which will enable the balancing of new solar and wind capacities – said Aleksic.

He emphasized that numerous challenges awaited us from 2026, such as CBAM and the payment of the carbon tax.

– The goal is to increase the share of green energy in the energy mix, and the adopted Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan predicts that by the end of this decade every second megawatt-hour will come from RES, and that the share of RES will triple by 2040 – said Aleksic.
