In the dynamic environment of the FMCG industry, where markets are changing under the influence of economic cycles, consumer habits and global challenges, companies that manage to maintain stable growth for decades are distinguished by a clear strategy, strong brands and the ability to adapt. Regional presence and long-term understanding of local markets have proven to be key factors in sustainability and competitiveness.

The companies within the Carlsberg Group in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are precisely an example of such an approach. Through conversations with Jovo Ivetić, Amir Tobudić and Miloš Kraljević, representatives of the company for markets in the region, we reveal how the beer industry and consumer habits have changed over the last two decades, how brands adapt to modern trends and what the plans for the further development of the portfolio, innovations and gastro-tourism experiences in the years to come are.

Jovo Ivetić, Sales Director Carlsberg Serbia: Premiumization and differentiation as a response to market changes

Carlsberg has been present in Serbia since 2003. How, from your perspective, has the market changed and how has Carlsberg managed to maintain competitiveness and stable growth?

- It is a rather long period of time, especially if we are talking about the FMCG industry, so I would divide it into several segments. First, we had a period from 2003, when the market was significantly influenced by the transition and the entry of foreign capital, followed by an increase in consumption. Later, from 2008, an economic crisis occurred which brought a period of stagnation, while after 2014 we have a period of consolidation and stabilization. The big shock for the market and the new adjustment was definitely the period of the pandemic and the inflation that followed it caused by the geopolitical changes that are happening in the world, which certainly have a strong impact on our country and market.

From the point of view of the FMCG industry, the entry of foreign companies has brought added value, through fresh capital, knowledge, development of brand portfolio and modern marketing. What left a strong impression on me, looking from the perspective of someone who deals with sales, is the development of retail, where we went from one strong TT channel through years of investment and development of management categories to channel division and dominance in the form of KA and LKA sales channels. This further resulted in the strengthening and growth of the premium portfolio, but also of the categories themselves.

For Carlsberg as a Danish company, first of all I will emphasize the strong corporate culture which brings with it an emphasis on ethics and constant employee development. That with which Carlsberg maintained constant business development and market share, comes from the strength of our brands and portfolio. In addition to this, for years we have strongly implemented premiumization, invested in innovation, digitization and production capacity of our brewery in Čelarevo. We have tried to establish ourselves as someone who is a leader in terms of identifying and implementing new products along with building partnership relations with our customers.

What are your plans for brand development in Serbia in the next few years?

- In the coming years, the focus of further development of the brand communication strategy will be based on achieving an optimal mix between traditional and innovative communication channels, recognizing the right consumption occasions and key values (assets) of our products, that set us apart from our competitors. We will take advantage of the increasing availability of new technologies, strive to always be modern and relevant and keep the consumer at the center of every message and innovation.

How does Carlsberg Serbia with its portfolio respond to the needs of gastronomic tourism in Serbia ?

- Gastro tourism in Serbia is, in my personal opinion, predominantly focused on traditional cuisine where beer is one of the most common food pairing products. Our country is recognized as a country that can offer diverse cuisine which also carries a geographical stamp with it (for example, the difference between cuisine from Vojvodina and cuisine from the southern parts of the country). With its rich portfolio and offer, Carlsberg Serbia certainly offers different tastes and brands of beer, which beer lovers in Serbia recognize very well. So, among other things, in our offer you can find the domestic beer "Lav Premium", but also international brands such as Tuborg, Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Budweiser Budvar or Erdinger. In short, if a beer lover wants a German, Czech, Danish or French beer, he can find it all in our portfolio.

Amir Tobudić, director of Carlsberg BiH: From record growth to experiences that combine beer and food

What business results did you achieve in the previous year in BiH and what do you plan to improve in 2026?

- At the end of this year, Carlsberg Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrates two full decades of business on the domestic market, and I can proudly say that we have achieved exceptional business results over the last few years, simultaneously developing as an organization and as a team. Only in the last year, which was very challenging for the beer industry, where a negative trend of the category was recorded, for Carlsberg Bosnia and Herzegovina this was a record year in terms of the achieved volume, but also financial results.

However, I must point out that for the company, but also for me personally as a leader, the focus is primarily on people and the team without whom such continuous successes would certainly not be possible, so I will also use this opportunity to express my gratitude to them for the daily effort they invest in each segment of their work.

In 2026, we plan to continue expanding and developing our alcohol-free category through innovations, especially after last year`s great results. At the same time, we will invest in team expansion and education of sales colleagues, to continue winning at the point of sale where, in my humble opinion, we are PROBABLY best in the beer class in both sales channels with focus on On-trade and KA and Local KA channel. By expanding the team, I primarily mean the sales team, because we believe that we still have potential for this year to continue growing the volume of both our Premium and Super Premium ranges.

Gastro tourism relies more and more on the authenticity and quality of the experience. How does Carlsberg BiH adjust its portfolio and approach to the market to meet the expectations of domestic and foreign guests?

- Carlsberg BiH has an excellent assortment in its offer that it can offer through pairing with food, especially beers through excellent combo offers in the On-Trade sales channel, and sales through the B2B channel with a focus on the Carlsberg brand, which in its marketing strategy, in addition to football, i.e. collaboration with Liverpool focuses on pairing with premium food (burgers and steaks).

We are very proud of our project in 2025 with CarlsBurger where we activated 43 establishments with a combo offer with CarlsBurger recipe and our Carlsberg beer, and we were also active through the B2B channel and sampling of 11,000 pieces of Carlsberg 0.33 can with orders which were related to food through the platform of the Korpa food delivery system. In 2026, we plan to continue this project with an increase in the number of facilities with CarlsBurger and Carlsberg beer.

With which products are you conquering the BiH market and in which areas do you see room for business improvement?

- Our portfolio strategy since 2018 has been focusing on the Premium and Super Premium segment of beer through our assortment with a focus on the Tuborg brand which is the fastest growing brand on our market with a leading position. Additionally, Carlsberg and 1664 Blanc saw double-digit growth in the beer category in 2025, while we have enriched the indispensable Somersby cider with innovations in the non-alcoholic segment of strawberry-lime and elderberry, which has experienced extraordinary success. For 2026, we are planning another innovation that we will soon present to consumers, and we are already looking forward to their reaction.

I see room for improvement in continuous investment in people, besides the great range that Carlsberg has, and in the continuous improvement of cooperation with our partners-customers, who are indispensable in our success on the BiH market, and continued growth in the P+SP, and AFB segment in the Cider and Beer category. The 2026 season is upon us, I believe that this will be another record year for Carlsberg BiH, especially when we have a winning team and a SEMPER ARDENS mindset in everything we do.

Miloš Kraljević, director of Carlsberg Montenegro: Authentic beer experiences as part of modern tourism in Montenegro

Carlsberg Montenegro was founded in 2008. How has the market changed over the past 20 years? What key trends in beer consumption have you noticed in the last few years in the region and how do these trends influence Carlsberg Montenegro`s strategy for future initiatives?

- Carlsberg Montenegro has been successfully operating on the Montenegrin market for more than 17 years and has recorded stable growth year after year, despite the numerous challenges the market faced during that period. The beer market has changed significantly in the meantime - from economic and regulatory challenges, to changes in the structure of consumption and consumer behavior - but thanks to strong brands, a flexible strategy and a clear vision, we have managed to adapt to those changes.

In the last few years, certain changes have been observed in consumer habits, particularly among the younger generations. These trends are reflected in the demand structure, with a slight increase in interest in products with a lower percentage of alcohol, non-alcoholic beers and innovative variants adapted to modern consumer habits.

Carlsberg Montenegro is responding to these trends through continuous innovations in the portfolio, developing new products and adapting communication to modern consumers. It is precisely through such an approach that we manage to stay relevant on the market and to strategically focus future initiatives towards sustainable growth, responsible consumption and further strengthening of relations with consumers.

Tourism in Montenegro is increasingly focusing on authentic experiences and local gastronomy. How does Carlsberg Montenegro plan to adapt its offer and initiatives so that tourists, as well as domestic guests, can experience authentic beer experiences? How do you see the potential for beer tourism development in the country?

- Our company recognizes the importance that tourism has for the overall market development in Montenegro, especially in the context of the growing interest in authentic experiences and local gastronomy. Although Montenegro records a large influx of tourists during the summer months, it is a relatively small market, so for now there is no full potential for the development of a strong and separate beer tourism in the classical sense.

Our strategy during the tourist season is primarily focused on offering tourists, but also domestic guests, the highest quality and most diverse beer experience, through a carefully selected product portfolio and cooperation with the catering sector. The focus is not solely on the quantity or breadth of the offer, but above all on the quality of the product, the way it is served and the overall experience which consumers have in contact with our brands.

In this sense, we see potential in the further improvement of beer culture, connecting beer with gastronomy and creating experiences that will complement the country`s tourist offer - through quality, authenticity and responsible enjoyment, instead of a mass concept of beer tourism.

What are your plans for brand development in Montenegro over the next few years?

- As mentioned earlier, in the coming years our company will focus on brand development through innovation and adaptation to changes in consumer habits. In parallel, we maintain a clear strategic focus on quality, as we believe that quality beer is always a relevant and reliable choice for consumers, regardless of market trends.
