Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic spoke today with Emanuele Giaufret, Deputy Director for Western Europe at the European External Action Service (EEAS), about reforms in the energy sector, with a special focus on further steps in the development of Serbia’s nuclear program.

The Minister emphasized that the formation of an interdepartmental group of experts was underway and that they would work on preparatory activities necessary for making a final “informed decision” on the use of nuclear energy for peacetime purposes, and that a special unit had been formed within the Ministry itself that would exclusively deal with considering the justification of the development of the nuclear program.

The ministry’s statement also reminds that Serbia has entered a new phase of preparations for the use of nuclear energy and that a preliminary technical study has been completed in cooperation with the French EDF, and that it includes an analysis of the readiness of the electricity grid to accept a nuclear power plant, examination of available technologies and potential partners.
