Improving energy efficiency of Military Medical Academy – Rehabilitation of hospital according to German model for EUR 211 million

The project “Greening the Public Sector - Rehabilitation of the Military Medical Academy” is a significant step forward in improving energy efficiency and sustainable resource management in the military healthcare system.

This was stated by Serbian Minister of Defense Bratislav Gasic, presenting a new project financed within the framework of bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Germany.

Green energy for sustainability

The project, worth a total of EUR 211 million, is being implemented in coordination with the German Development Bank and the German Ministry of Mining and Energy.

Minister Gasic emphasized that the goal of the project was to reduce energy consumption and use renewable sources through the preservation and protection of the natural environment.

The Military Medical Academy is, as he stated, one of the largest military hospitals of the tertiary level of healthcare in Southeast Europe, where a council for any type of intervention can be formed under one roof in ten minutes.

He pointed out that the “Rehabilitation of the Military Medical Academy” project was being implemented in three phases, with the first phase planned to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

This phase would include the rehabilitation of the building structure, the reconstruction of the roof on the lower part of the building with an increase in thermal resistance to heat transfer, the reconstruction of the system for preparing hot sanitary water using waste heat using heat pumps, the reconstruction of water connections, and more.

New equipment and cooling systems

Gasic said that work was underway to ensure that the MMA received new cooling systems by June 30 the next year and that 1,200 beds were replaced with new hospital beds according to global standards.

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Anke Konrad pointed out that the MMA was the largest medical institution in Serbia and one of the largest in Europe, and that one of the main goals of the project was to reduce gas, water and electricity consumption.

Konrad emphasized that the project had been supported by the German Development Bank with EUR 50 million and the EU with EUR 5 million.

The announcement of this tender is being carried out under the international competitive tender procedure and offers a very wide range of contractual options under internationally recognized contractual conditions, the ambassador stated.

Konrad emphasized that it was important that the procurement was carried out according to the standards of the German Development Bank, all of which ensured the transparency of the project.
