- Serbia, like other European countries, is in the process of energy transition in which new sources of baseload energy are necessary to exit coal-fired production - he said.
Popadic emphasizes that last year and this year Serbia undertook "a large number of activities to develop strategic guidelines and documents in the field of energy related to nuclear energy".
- We have lifted the ban on the construction of nuclear power plants that had been in force since 1989 and have begun several years of preparations and analysis of the justification for the development of a nuclear program, in accordance with the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the aim of ensuring long-term and sustainable energy security - Popadic said.
He stated that Serbia, by amending the Energy Law, has begun the first phase of the development of a nuclear program for peacetime purposes.
He added that memorandums of understanding had been signed with the French Electric Power Company (EDF), the South Korean company KHNP, and the Russian Federation, and that cooperation was at a similar level with the United States.
- There are initiatives to expand cooperation with other countries whose experiences are useful in decision-making during the first phase in which we are working on improving the regulatory framework, strengthening human capacities, exchanging knowledge, organizing professional training, and informing the public - said Popadic.
The neighboring countries - Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania - already have nuclear power plants and are planning their further development, and it is useful for Serbia to review their experiences and initiate a public dialogue on the role of nuclear energy, he noted.
Popadic emphasized the importance of cooperation in this process between the ministries of science, finance, environmental protection, the Vinca Nuclear Institute, the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security (SRBATOM), universities and faculties.
