Three station buildings in important passenger hubs on the Belgrade-Subotica high-speed railway are due for rehabilitation and adaptation. The Serbian Railways Infrastructure has announced, specifically, a tender for the rehabilitation and adaptation of the Backa Topola and Subotica station buildings, as well as side wings A and D of the Novi Sad station building, from which a canopy fell off a little over a year ago, killing 16 people.

Rehabilitation and adaptation, as stated, involves the development of a project and the execution of works according to the project at the stations in question in order to bring the station buildings into a functionally prescribed state “in terms of carrying out structural, construction works, as well as returning the final surface treatments to their original state.”

The estimated value of the public procurement was not stated.

The deadline for submitting bids is December 22.

The tender for the rehabilitation of buildings in Subotica and Backa Topola, as well as part of the building in Novi Sad, is not surprising given that in previous months, an examination of certain facilities on this section was ordered. Let us remind that traffic on the high-speed line from Novi Sad (to the point beyond Petrovaradin, ed. eKapija) to Subotica was established in October, but it was precisely during that period that the Serbian Railway Infrastructure adopted an official document stating that six station buildings did not have occupancy permits. These were the stations in Novi Sad, Subotica, Kisac, Backa Topola, Zednik and Naumovicevo.

The announcement of this tender also indicates that Infrastructure and the state are trying to get at least part of the station building in Novi Sad ready by February, when the high-speed railway to Budapest is scheduled to open. However, it is not yet certain whether trains will be able to stop in Novi Sad any time soon. As a reminder, the entire station building has not yet been examined and it has not been determined whether it is fit for partial use and renovation or for complete demolition. The job of examining the stability and statics of this building was awarded only after several attempts, but not for the entire building but for two of its side wings out of a total of four wings. Not even the part from which the canopy fell off.

The first part of the high-speed railway, from Belgrade to Novi Sad, was opened to traffic in March 2022 and traffic on that section continued until the canopy collapsed on November 1, 2024, since when trains have been operating to and from Petrovaradin. The railway to Subotica was supposed to be operational at the end of November 2024, which was announced by the authorities before the Novi Sad tragedy.
