Airport construction planned in Sjenica - Opportunity for development of southwest Serbia

The construction of an airport in Sjenica is planned, which could become a significant infrastructure project and contribute to better connectivity and economic development of southwest Serbia.

There is a military airport with a concrete runway near Sjenica, which is not in use.

In Nis, the Minister without Portfolio in Charge of Reconciliation, Regional Cooperation and Social Stability, Usame Zukorlic, the Mayor of Sjenica Municipality, Mersija Camovic Rebronja, and the Director of Airports of Serbia, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, discussed the possibility of implementing this project.

As announced by the Minister’s Office, during the meeting, the Director of Airports of Serbia presented current activities and plans for the development of the airport, with special emphasis on the new passenger terminal building in Nis, which was put into operation in July 2024.

Let us remind that in February, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic offered BiH to participate in the construction of an airport near Sjenica. At that time, in Banja Luka, after a meeting with the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, he stated that he did not understand why political barriers were being placed in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for projects such as the construction of the airport in Trebinje, and offered that BiH participate in the construction of the airport near Sjenica on Pester.

Aerodrom Sjenica (IATA: /, ICAO: LYSJ) poznat još i kao aerodrom Dubinje, je vojni aerodrom u Srbiji, u blizini Sjenice na Pešterskoj visoravni. Aerodrom je takođe u blizini Zlatara. Aerodrom ima jednu asfaltnu poletno sletnu stazu dugačku 2500 i široku 30 metara.

Aerodrom je bio alternativni vojni aerodrom Jugoslovenske narodne armije, koji nije imao stalnu posadu. Tokom NATO agresije SR Jugoslavije 1999. godine aerodrom je oštećen.

Godine 2006. vojska je objavila da postoji mogućnost da Aerodrom u Sjenici postane javni aerodrom. (Wikipedia)
