The construction of the Kostolac wind farm has been completed and the first wind farm of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has produced its first megawatt-hours, EPS announced. After receiving the decision to connect to the transmission system, the voltage in the substation and four circuits was released, and then the blades of wind generator 1 spun. This marked the beginning of the trial operation of the new production capacity.

– This is a historic moment for EPS and, in addition to energy from water, coal and the Sun, we now also have the first energy from our wind farm in Kostolac on the grid. That is 66 megawatts of new power and a big step towards increasing the share of renewable energy and towards sustainable energy development not only of EPS, but of the entire Serbian energy sector – said Dusan Zivkovic, CEO of EPS.

He emphasized that the wind farm in Kostolac was just the beginning of further intensive development of new green capacities within EPS, and that it was very significant that it had been built on the site of an old mining dump and that the area had been given a completely new, sustainable purpose.

– The construction of the wind farm was both a great challenge and a real opportunity for experienced engineers and young, new forces in EPS to jointly gain new knowledge and experience for future projects – emphasized Zivkovic. The energizing of other wind turbines of the Kostolac wind farm at the locations of Drmno, Petka, Cirikovac and Klenovnik is underway. The planned annual production is 187 million kilowatt-hours per year, which is enough to supply green electricity to about 30,000 households, the statement said.

They remind that the project is financed from a loan from the German development bank KfW in the amount of EUR 110 million, grants from the European Union, namely the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), amount to EUR 30 million, while part of the funds were provided by EPS.
