China’s Poweroad to build its first energy storage system in Serbia – Plant near Smederevo Fortress to be operational in early 2026

The Chinese company Poweroad has announced its first energy storage system (ESS) project in Serbia, which is scheduled to start operating in early 2026. The project was presented to the Serbian delegation during the industrial cooperation conference between Xiamen and Serbia held on November 10, 2025 in the city of Xiamen, China.

Poweroad’s first energy storage system in Serbia is being built in an industrial zone near Smederevo Fortress, combining a solar power plant and a battery storage capacity of 0.5 MW / 1 MWh. The installation will use an AC-coupled configuration, with the option of discharging in a period of two or four hours, which is typical for industrial and commercial applications. The project is being implemented on a turnkey basis, including design, procurement, delivery, installation, commissioning and service.

The project, according to the company’s statement, aims to demonstrate the technology and support future cooperation between Chinese and Serbian companies in the renewable energy sector.

At the conference, which was attended by representatives of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Serbia, as well as delegates from the Serbian energy and trade sectors, Poweroad’s Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Albert Su, presented the project and participated in detailed discussions on future cooperation opportunities between Chinese and Serbian companies in the field of renewable energy and industrial development.

As stated, Serbia, China’s first free trade partner in Central and Eastern Europe, offers new opportunities for Chinese companies to access the European market. Electricity supply in Serbia is still predominantly coal-based, and the grid has limited capacity to smooth peak loads. With the rapid growth of solar and wind energy, maintaining balance in the electricity system is becoming increasingly challenging. To address these issues, local policies now require large renewable projects to include energy storage, while allowing commercial and industrial users to participate in the electricity market at spot prices.

As the gap between peak and off-peak electricity prices grows and the ancillary services market matures, the economic value of energy storage for peak-smoothing and backup supply is becoming increasingly apparent.

Encouraged by favorable policies, the energy storage sector in Serbia is moving from the demonstration phase to the commercialization phase. In the short term, energy storage systems for commercial and industrial users, especially those that enable self-consumption with peak-smoothing and distributed storage, are proving to be the most feasible and fastest-growing projects.

Poweroad is already known in Europe for more than 600 successfully implemented ESS projects, and Serbian partners emphasized that the cooperation with the Chinese company was extremely professional and well-organized.
