Serbia candidate to host World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in 2029

Serbia has submitted a bid to host the World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in 2029, 50 years after they were last held in Belgrade. This ambition was confirmed by Finance Minister Sinisa Mali during a meeting with World Bank Executive Director Beatrice Maser, discussing the country’s economic performance, budget plans, current projects and preparations for Expo 2027.

During the meeting, Mali stressed that Serbia maintained stable public finances despite global economic instabilities, with public debt at 44.3%, well below the eurozone average. Mali invited Maser to tour the Expo complex, calling it the largest active construction site in Europe, and expressed hope that Serbia’s bid to host the 2029 meeting would be successful.

He also emphasized that 121 countries had confirmed their presence at the Expo 2027 International Specialized Exhibition up till that point and thanked the World Bank for its support in implementing systemic reforms that had brought significant results.

Beatrice Maser is the World Bank’s Executive Director in charge of the markets of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
