Government adopts regulation limiting margins to 20% – Implementation of measures to be monitored by market inspection

The Government of Serbian today adopted a regulation limiting margins in stores to 20% for products from 23 categories, and implementation will begin on September 1.

Finance Minister Sinisa Mali previously said that prices would be reduced for up to 20,000 products in all retail chains and that lower prices would apply to 80% of everything that citizens bought every day.

Mali told RTS that in countries that had implemented similar measures, such as Romania and Hungary, there had been an increase in turnover, and therefore higher VAT collection, so there were no concerns about the impact of these measures on the Serbian budget.

– What is more important is how significantly this will affect the budgets of each household. We expect price reductions of an average of 10, 15, 20%. It is important that it is not just a few products, but an entire range of foods that we all buy every day – said Mali.

The implementation of the measures will, as he announced, be controlled by the market inspection.
