All Conditions Met for Reconstruction and Expansion of Prahovo Port – First Green Terminal in Serbia to Be Operational in 40 Months, Capacity to Rise from 1.4 to 3.2 Million Tons

All legal and regulatory conditions for initiating the reconstruction, expansion, and development of new facilities at the Port of Prahovo have been fulfilled. Once works commence—expected in the near future—the project is set to increase the port’s annual handling capacity from the current 1.4 million tons to over 3.2 million tons within 40 months. This development will establish Prahovo as a strategic logistics hub in Eastern Serbia.

Valued at EUR 45.5 million, the reconstruction and capacity expansion project will be fully financed by the Serbian state budget. The first phase includes the rehabilitation of a long-neglected winter dock, employing cutting-edge sustainable and green technologies. Additionally, Serbia’s first green terminal will be established—designed for the collection of hazardous waste from ships, a service that until now has not existed. This was announced by Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, Aleksandra Sofronijevic, during a site visit to the port.


The vision is for Prahovo Port to also serve as a multimodal logistics terminal. Discussions are expected to resume with Bulgarian counterparts on constructing a 30-kilometer railway link, including a two-kilometer segment on the Serbian side, near the Mokranje border crossing. This would enable year-round cargo transport—even during periods of low water levels or restricted navigation on the Danube, Sofronijevic added.

It’s worth recalling that a public procurement procedure for selecting the construction contractor was completed last autumn, and the contract was signed in December 2024. The selected consortium includes Aqua Mont Service d.o.o. Belgrade, Mont R d.o.o. Meljak, Axis Gradjevinski Biro d.o.o. Sremska Kamenica, Trioprojekt d.o.o. Belgrade, Elixir Engineering d.o.o. Sabac, Statik d.o.o. Kovin, Geodetski Biro Geogroup Negotin, Elixir Craft d.o.o. Sabac, and CRBC Serbia Belgrade. This spring, the Ministry also conducted a tender for selecting the technical supervision team to oversee the execution of the Prahovo Port expansion project.
