Construction of gas interconnector with capacity of 1.5 billion m3 per year between Serbia and Macedonia announced – Srbijagas and Nomagas sign Memorandum

The public company Srbijagas has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the operator of the national natural gas transport system of North Macedonia, Nomagas AD from Skopje.

The document on future bilateral cooperation between the national gas company of Serbia and the operator of the national natural gas transport system of North Macedonia was signed by the CEOs of Srbijagas and Nomagas, Dusan Bajatovic and Muhamet Elmazi.

The two parties, as stated, hereby confirm the political intention expressed in the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation in the field of gas between the relevant ministries of Serbia and North Macedonia, signed in Skopje in October 2024, and in particular the importance of interconnecting energy markets, strengthening the security of gas supply and diversifying natural gas supply routes.

– By signing this document, Srbijagas and Nomagas also express their intention to soon implement the project to build the North Macedonia-Serbia gas interconnector on their territories, emphasizing the importance of mutual support in the development of this strategic project in order to increase the security of gas supply, balance supply and demand and facilitate cross-border gas transport operations – the statement reads.

With this Memorandum, the two parties also verified the border-crossing point of the gas pipeline, which is an important element of the preparation of project and technical documentation and project implementation.

The interconnector between the two countries, for which a Feasibility Study will soon be prepared, will provide a two-way flow of natural gas in the amount of 1.5 billion m3/year.

On the territory of North Macedonia, a connection to the existing Klecovce gas pipeline is planned, and on the territory of Serbia, a connection is planned in Vranje, to the already built gas pipeline. The diameter of the future interconnector will be 500 mm, and the nominal pressure 55 bar. The total length of the gas pipeline that will connect the two countries will be approximately 70 kilometers, of which about 47 km is on the territory of the Republic of Serbia and about 23 km is on the territory of North Macedonia.

By signing the Memorandum of Understanding, the contracting parties declare their support for strengthening cooperation between the countries of Southeastern Europe and establishing a regional energy market as part of the EU internal energy market.
